Poop anyone?
« on: June 14, 2011, 08:35:56 PM »

Can anyone tell me what a normal poop looks like for chinchillas? And what does poop look like that I should be worried about?

you want poop,i got lots of poop.  :2funny:

not sure if you'll get a good view, its a vid..sorry  but as for size, all every chins poops size will vary.. my bo doesn't eat much at all, his poops are tiny.. chin used to be a big hay eater and his poops were huge, but he doesn't eat as much anymore [and i've tried them all] so the aren't as thick anymore.

i couldn't find a picture already uploaded to photobucket with poop in it, so i do hope this helps.  and you can see what a mess my girls make  :'(

it should look a bit like a very fat piece of long grain rice. the ends should be round and smooth, not sharp.

what you should worry about: lack of poo (very very important you keep an eye out for this), small dry poo, sharp ends mean the poo is going a bit soft, soft poo, poos that stick to fur and each other, liquid poo (emergency trip to the vet)

like jean said, you want lots of poo!

If it has a mucus slime it could be a parasite like giadia.
If it's just soft sounds like to many treats, or somethin else that didn't agree.
Only give pellets and hay , or jut hay for 2 days and see if it clears. If that doesn't work you might want to get the vet to do a wet mount and check the droppings for other things.

Well, it's not sticking to him. It sticks to other pieces of poo. It's not dry and hard. It's a little moist and last night i saw one piece that had a tiny bit of mucusy looking stuff. If I see it again tonight while he's playing, I'll try to get a pic of it. So it could possibly be from treats? We've only been giving him one treat a day, either dandelion drop or raisin.

too many treats are the most common cause for poo trouble. a sweet treat like dandelion drops and raisins should be given very sparingly, once a day is too often. a raisin once a week/2 weeks would be ok.

you can feed other, healthy, treats more often. these include rolled oats, apple branches, shredded wheat, rosehips. however, keep it sparse.

for now though, keep it simple, as debbie said, hay, pellets, water, chews. that's it. once his poo gets back to normal, you can slowly introduce treats again. the thing to remember is that the do not need treats, incorrect treats can cause a lot of problems and in my experience, a funky chew enriches their lives a lot more than a treat that's gone in seconds.
