Suddenly small poop? Cause for concern?
« on: June 26, 2011, 02:38:45 PM »

earlier I worried about him biting his pellets to dust

But now he has a nice squeshy tummy, no more worries

But this morning when I woke up I notice his poop is half the size it was last night.
His new chew toys he's gotten recently
Vine chew toy and pumice rock

Otherwise everything is the usual fresh hay/pellets water every 2 days
And bedding change every 3-4 days

Ideas??

Or its like human ... Sometimes we have small poop ?

Last question.. I was recommended Mazuri pellets but i realize now it saids on the package.. It saids "alfafa meal"
Isn't that suppose to be bar for them if eaten daily ?

that is correct, they poop sizes will differ throughout the day.  if they were small for a full day or two, i would say make a vet apt, but like us, if they just ate not too long ago, their poops will be bigger, but if they haven't eaten for awhile, their poops will be smaller. so it will be completely normal to always notice some bigger ones and some smaller ones.

but like i said, if they are all small at any time, something may be wrong.

sometimes they just have small poop but i would keep an eye on it. if mine have smaller poo, i give them a raisin (apart from mae, she can't have them) and that usually helps.

are the poos just smaller but otherwise look the same? are they drier than usual?

you'll find that most pellets are alfalfa based and that's fine for most chinchillas (there are certain health problems where additional calcium etc is not desirable) - it's not the same as giving them alfalfa hay on a daily basis.
