making cage more stable
« on: July 22, 2011, 06:52:27 AM »

i know i have a picture of my cage somewhere on here but its prob easier to post a new picture. I bought this cage used. Its prob 4 ft high or higher. Whats holding the connecting pieces are plastic clips. A wire piece is placed on top of another and on one side the clips aren't holding well. I also want to put wooden shelves but i want to fix the cage first. Its a super pet cage i belive. Any ideas? I'll try to post a picture later.

I used a cage like that for awhile.  You can go to Wal-mart or to your home improvement store (Lowes, Home Depot) and ask for zip ties.  In fact the Dollar Tree also sells them.  They are plastic strips with a hole at one end and little teeth on the other.  When you stick the end through the hole and pull tight the teeth catch the hole and hold.  Once in place you have to cut them off with scissors.  Reinforce all of the sides with those.  Use a few per side since your chinchilla could find them and chew them off.  We never had a problem with that as long as we were careful to cut the end off of the zip tie after it was fastened.  Place wooden shelves going both front and back and side to side.  We alternated ours. (Lower level front to back, middle level side to side, ect)  Once you do that the cage should be plenty stable.

I think mine would end up chewing on them.I used metal clips. that you need to screw in. They do have some rubber on them. Mainly on the inside.

If you use zip ties in strategic places it will help firm things up. Try zipping where you have shelves that will cover up the plastic.
Another thing that really stabilizes a weak cage is an L-shaped ledge. Those are especially good for cages with smaller gauge bars like the Critter Nation brand cages.

You could go to Martin's cages, and order C-rings.  Those are better than plastic clips.  If the cage is in good shape, there's no reason to buy a new one. Just get parts for it.

Thanks, I'll have to check out his website. We ended up getting something from home depo that has been working pretty good.
