New Chin owner, I have a mom and baby
« on: September 11, 2011, 03:38:09 PM »

I'm new to chins more or less. We had some when I was young, but my family recently got back into them. I'm out of the house and I feel in love with my sister's black chin male. So..I kept my eye out for a chin and found this momma and baby! He's supposed to be a week old if I remember right. She actually came from the same breeder that my sister got her black chin from! Also, I know the cage sucks, it's only temporary!

Here is mom (a grey?)

I'm assuming he's also grey, he has a white tail, it's adorable! His daddy was a white chin.

Easily one of the cutest baby animals on the planet!

Drinking, too cute!

Yep, they are both standard grey.  That is a good looking female.  I wonder why the breeder retired her.  What will you do with the male when he is weaned?

Thank you! He sold her to a girl and got a call a while later from her saying she didn't want the chin any more. He bred her once to a white male to see if she would throw white, but she didn't so he put her up for sale. He has a lot of breeders and his focus is on black and white chinchillas. She's only two years old and she's fairly nice. She barks/grunts at me a lot when I try to pet the baby, but she hasn't tried to bite and lets me pet her a bit. I'm keeping the male baby for sure. My mom might set up another cage for the female at her place, or I will set one up here once the baby is weaned.

Offtopic question: what's the bedding made of?

That looks like colored carefresh bedding.

I know this has nothing to do with the original thread, but just to clear up info for new breeders that might read this.  The breeder was misinformed.  Placing a grey with a white will always give you a 50% chance for grey and 50% chance for white. It all depends on what gene the baby gets from dad.  It has absolutely nothing to do with the standard mom.  So long story short, he just didn't wait long enough and you got a nice looking chinchilla!
