« on: March 14, 2012, 04:15:24 AM »

We just noticed a black growth in chin's ear. We first thought it could bea piece of poop stuck there but now see it goes all the way through to the back of his ear too. not poop.what could this be? worried for him.

mine charges $45 or something like that a visit.  best thing to do is call and ask your vet what they charge :)  good luck.. let us know how you make out.

Could be fungus or maybe scab from scratching due to dry skin. I'd call the vet tho, it shouldnt be too much unless they do some serious tests or surgery.

Just google exotic vets; or use the vet directory from this site (top of the page where it says directories). There should be some around, or you can ask any small mammal vets if they have done many chinchillas. Those are your options since I don't know where you live. If you live in NC State or near Georgia University call the vets there, the vet at my zoo had recommended them if I felt the drive was reasonable bc they are excellent with exotics.

What color is your chinchilla and how old is he?  Chinchillas that have the beige gene get freckles in their ears as they get older.  This includes beige, brown velvet, pink white, and tan.  I will see if I can find a picture to post.
