Chinchilla bedding
« on: May 01, 2012, 01:43:33 PM »

I thought I would get some opinions from the many experts on here. I always use pine shavings for my 5 chins...We have a shredder her at work and as i was emptying the bag...I wondered if that was safe to use with the pine bedding. It is in such tiny pieces..I wouldn't think that would hurt them but would it??  ::shrug::

I need some thought on this subject and I probably already know what will be said..Don't change a good thing that I have had absolutley NO problems with at all??!!

Thank you!  ::silly::

Some people say the ink and toner on paper shreds can be toxic. I'm not sure if that's true or not. I do know that shredded paper does not control odor and moisture as well as pine. You would certainly need to make sure they don't get soaked with water or urine and grow mold. I don't know why there would be a problem using plain paper shreds as long as the chinchilla doesn't make a habit of eating them. Using pine chips is okay but only if they are kiln dried. That is my understanding of it.

Before I made fleece liners I would use pine, and since I had some paper bedding left I mixed them together and that also did well (was a little less messy since there wasn't so much pine). I wouldn't change many owners use pine :)
