I am feeding my chin the Kline pellets and alfalfa hay cubes. He also gets a little bit of the Oxbow Timothy hay. I know the Kay Tee pellets are not that good but what about the hay? I am just asking because every where sells that brand of hay and if its ok then I would not have to order it. The lady I get the Kline pellets from said he don't really need the timothy hay with the alfalfa but he really likes it. I usually stuff it in a toilet paper tube so he can play and eat at the same time.

Thats the hay i use its ablously fine my eat tons of it!

I am a big believer in Timothy Hay.  In fact, I usually suggest it over Alfalfa because most chinchilla pellets are made mainly of alfalfa.  So it you feed the feed timothy hay with the chinchilla pellets they are getting the best of both.  (Timothy and Alfalfa have different nutritional contents)

As to your second question I try to stay clear of pet store hays and feeds whenever possible.  Its not as fresh.  The chinchillas can tell as well.  A chinchilla that has been fed fresh hay will usually refuse to eat pet store hay if offered it.  If that is all you can get than its better than nothing, but buying it straight from a company that grows it is better.  I have heard wonderful things about oxbow.

My vet said they need the timothy to grind down those back teeth.
I would think alfalfa is easier to eat, and not as good at the job as timothy either.

I give mine both so they have the choice the only reason I got the alfalfa cubes is so they would have something else to chew on

but I do know that alfalfa if more fatty than timothy haybut because they are so active i figured that they will just burn off the fat anyway

Timothy hay is a must, alfalfa is OK on occasion. Too much alfalfa can cause calcium stones.
