IS it normal for hay to be a greenish color?
« on: June 04, 2012, 04:01:30 PM »

I went and bought Kaytee timothy hay cubes yesterday and when I got home I noticed that they were greener than I am used to seeing. I went and bought another pack today and this one was the familiar brownish color that I am used to  seeing. A number of other bags of the cubes had the unfamiliar greener color. There wasn't any unusually odor or anything. They feel normal.  Should I allow my chins to eat this?

The greener the better. It's not so good when it is not green because it is old and probably has lost most of its nutrients.

Green hay is fine, it all starts out as some sort of grass after all. ::nod::
It can mean darker poos but I find that my rabbits and chinchillas much prefer the greener hays.

Here's an article you might be interested in although it's a horse website the same goes for rodents and rabbits. It is on testing hay.

Its fine it just depends on where it was grown, and lots of other factors. I've seen some really green timothy hay before (I have a horse) that actually looked kinda unnatural. As long as its not all yellow (make sure theres some green in there) and not wet it's fine (wet=mold so be careful)

Thank you all for the responses. It appears the hay was ok afterall as neither the chinnies or me suffered any ill effects.
