Where to find a playpen?
« on: August 08, 2012, 10:45:33 AM »

My new baby chinchilla lives in my room in his cage. My room is always very clean and organized but there are a few things he definitely shouldn't be able to get into. I wanted to look into buying one of those children's playpens? Something I can connect to his cage so when I open the doors for playtime he can run out into a safe environment.
Any ideas? Websites to buy from? Or even any stores that might be in my area?

There are some on ebay:  http://www.ebay.com/sch/Pet-Supplies-/1281/i.html?_nkw=playpen&_sop=15&_clu=2&_fcid=1&_localstpos&_stpos&gbr=1
, some pet stores can have it too but they are not high i don't know if chins won't jump from it .
As anyone tried those?

I went to UHAUL and got 3 giant boxes (like 4-5 feet tall) and thats my playpen :) I ducttape the outside of the spaces in between (where theres a space so you can fold it). Its strong and reliable cardboard I've been using it for months and still going strong :)

Remember chinchillas can jump 7 feet straight up.  Any playpen will require some sort of top.  It might take a few days to a week for your chinchilla to learn he can jump out, but eventually he will.  :)  The ones in the eBay link above do have a top, but those wire spacings look really big.  It might work on an adult but a young one would slip right out.

Be very careful. If it's a dog pen, the chinchilla may be able to slide himself between the widely spaced bars. Snickerdoodle is constantly trying to do that, so I have to sit in the pen with him. Also, I cover the pen with a lightweight bed sheet. I'll try to get a picture of the contraption. My setup does work, but you must be careful that the chin does not escape.
