I have read in multiple places that birch is unsafe, but also in multiple others that IS safe. So is it or isn't it??? They sell it on. Tjs supplies...

I don't think any wood is exactly free from toxins. In this case you might want to get someone to comment that has experience using birch with chinchillas. Considering birch shows up on lists of wood that is known to be hazardous to wood workers and published in a scientific journal I'm a little skeptical.
