EMERGENCY CAGE SITUATION
« on: December 18, 2012, 08:53:01 AM »

Our cage broke this morning. A bar separated from the other bar, leaving a huge gap that Snickerdoodle will see as an escape possibility. This happened because the Lava Ledge was pulling on the flimsy bars of our My First Ferret Home cage; eventually, when I touched it to see the issue, the bar snapped right off.  We're going to Petco immediately to purchase a new one; we only have 2 choices. I know I should be getting one of the nice $400 ones, but there's no time for that right now; we need to fix this before Nickers escapes.
We have two, possibly three,  options:

http://www.petco.com/product/116383/Midwest-Ferret-Nation-Double-Unit-with-Stand-Ferret-Cage.aspx?CoreCat=MM_SmallAnimalSupplies_CagesHabitatsHutches

or what we have now (it's a terrible flimsy thing):

http://www.petco.com/product/15487/Super-Pet-Multi-Floor-Ferret-Home.aspx?CoreCat=certona-_-ProductListTopRated_Ferret_1-_-Super%20Pet%20Multi-Floor%20Ferret%20Home-15487

or (if they have it) :

http://www.petco.com/product/119370/WARE-Living-Room-Series-Deluxe-Ferret-Home.aspx?CoreCat=ChinchillaHPCagesHabitats

Also, should I leave Snix in his carrier until we get the new cage and set it up? It may take 8 hours--- maybe even more.
PLEASE HELP.

What if you get some bailing wire and wrap the bars. Use two sets of pliers. Bend the ends of the wire into themselves to make them safe.

Thanks, but we're getting a new cage. Do you know which to get?

Sorry I couldn't respond sooner. I was out shopping and couldn't do much.
The super pet cage looks cheap to me. The Ferret Nation is an interesting idea because you can order custom trays for it later made for chinchillas and have nice deep metal trays. I'm not sure if the trays it comes with are metal but it sounds like your chin hasn't taken to eating plastic... yet. The Ware cage looks nice but you may have to fabricate a metal tray if you want to replace it.

A day in the carrier should be okay. He might go off his food until he gets back in his cage so I'd withhold treats until tomorrow. Just make sure he has water. Unfortunately it could aggravate his fur chewing. We shall see.

Thanks so, so much.  ;)
He has actually eaten plastic to the point where I've had to remove all of the green plastic cage accessories in the Super Pet cage (except the ramp-- I guess I only removed 2 things...). He does it when he's lonely or bored.

My chinchillas use the Critter nation which same as ferret and is great id recommend it. Mine never have chewed on the floor but some do. But its a popular cage and can get the pans like gray said or put fleece over it which alot sites have already made for that cage ive found online. Its a big cage which i love.

Here's the pans for the cage if ever interested it also keeps poop in too.
