Travel... again
« on: January 15, 2013, 05:19:09 PM »

Which one is less stressful to the chinchilla:
1. Taking Snickerdoodle on a plane with us for a week and playing with him every day as usual when we arrive (plane trip will be only a few hours, we're staying in the US)
or
2. Leaving him at a vet's boarding center. He won't get one- on - one attention and he won't come out to play (probably at all) and he will be with people he doesn't know. But the commute to bring him there and back is an hour (by car from my home) each way. There will be other animals in the center, and they will be noisy.
Both options are for a 5- day to week- long trip.
Again, I don't want to go at all, but my parents are making me.

Yikes that sounds pretty bad. I don't know what is worse.

I think the plane option is better because he'll be with me...

hmmm...that would be a tough call. i would imagine the plane ride would be less stressful but theres no guarentee the chin will survive...i would try to get a house sitter. or maybe someone to come by once a day.

although petstore chins are usually surrounded by noisey animals and less than ideal conditions and still survive.

maybe see if there are any chinchilla rescue centers that would take the chin in for the week?

Is there not anyone who can come check on him?  You need to check with the airlines.  Many will NOT let you carry a chinchilla onto the plane with you.  Most make you check them in to go under the plane with the cargo.  There is no guarantee as to how long he will be outside waiting to be loaded.  If you are somewhere warm he could over heat.  If you are somewhere cold he could get a respiratory infection.
If you can not carry him on the plane with you he is better off being left at the vets.

We're leaving him at the vet. Will he be ok?

your best bet is to ask the vet and go over the needs of the chinchilla with him and ask how they will take care of him

If he does stay at vet id bring your own stuff to put in there cage. When i had to leave mine for hospitalization they had taped cardboard house plastic water bottle etc. Also mine gave him oxbow and they wouldn't eat anything else till i bought oxbow which planned to anyway so worked out.

We brought his cage and toys and everything, but he still looked at me, terrified. I miss him so much; can't wait to pick him up on Tuesday!
