I haven't thought much about this subject until now, but how important is it to check for hair rings? I am slightly worried about doing it myself. Will snickerdoodle be  upset that I am touching him there? I haven't done this before (yes, I know I should've) and don't know what to expect.

Generally, from what I have noticed with my 6 boys, is on the regular, I find them with their penis out cleaning it. I would watch for this behavior (from what I have seen during the day). If you see this, then I would see no problems with possible hair rings. If he is doing this then he should not get any hair rings. From what I have learned chins are normally pretty good with taking care of that type of things themselves.

Chinchillas don't really care so much that you are checking.  They care more that you are holding them still on their back.  I find it easier to get one person to hold the chinchilla and another person to check.   It only takes a few seconds.
