Questions Deciphering Chinchilla Sounds
« on: August 15, 2013, 01:43:19 AM »

I just purchased a super sweet female Chinchilla off of craigslist the other day. I have been doing research everyday for about a month now. However, she is the first chinchilla I have ever owned and still have much to learn. All of you experienced chinchilla lovers, can you help me understand the sounds she makes? Is there any website that gives examples of the sounds/explanations? I know what 'barking' means and i know what the cute little squeaks mean generally.

The new sound she's been making today was after we were done playing for an hour. When I put her back in her cage, she ran to get a drink of water, and plopped in the corner of her cage. Her eyes looked all tired or sad and began to grind her teeth lightly. She was not doing it in a threatening way, she'd still let me scratch her head. She did this three times in three different corners of the cage. I was just curious what the grinding meant? The photo above is what she kept doing when she plops down.

Thank you!  ::silly::

I'm curious myself. My chinchilla does that too sometimes. Sometimes he'll click his teeth when I am holding him in a specific pattern. If I click back at him in the same manner he'll keep doing it. He seems to do it when he's content to be still.

This is so funny: I played some of the sounds in the link provided above, and Gizmo's ears perked up and he was really listening! I determined that the sounds he is making are "baby cries," and considering that he's only 4 months old, this makes sense! He was probably weened too early, and that's why he makes this sound. Thank you for verifying that for me!
