My Chin loves his poop flinging machine. :(
« on: February 16, 2014, 10:22:06 AM »

My Chinchilla is named Popsicle. This is my conversation with him. (translated to English for those who aren't fluent in squeek squeek).

Popsicle: Thank you for building me this poop flinging machine! I love it very much!

Me: It's not a poop flinging machine, I built you a flying saucer running wheel from Ikea parts!

Popsicle: First, I climb onto it, and poop on wheel!

Me: It's not a poop flinger!

Popsicle: Then I run and the wheel spins and poop gets launched out of the cage!

Me: It's not a poop flinger!!!

Popsicle: Wow, look how much range I got on this thing! I can fling my poop almost to 2 feet away from my cage!

Me: IT'S NOT A POOP FLIN... you know what? Fine. Go enjoy your poop flinger. you win. sigh. (puts a dustpan and brush next to the cage)

:( rofl. ... and I was worried he wouldn't run on it... that lasted less than 1 day ROFL...

Bad cage design... wheel is overly big, cage is too small, so the wheel is slanting facing the front of the cage... resulting in poop being flung directly outside the cage.  :'(

My wheel doesn't fling it but it does rattle around in it and sometimes the sound gets on my nerves. Then he'll jump off the wheel and let his tail drag on the running surface while the wheel spins down and it kind of works like a broom. I'm amazed it hasn't caused noticeable damage to his tail because that noise is way louder.

My wheel probably weighs 5kg in total, so a 500g chin running on it doesn't cause much rattling lol...

Maybe I won't get Aime that flying saucer I promised her.... Oh well her cage faces the other cage that is no more than 2' apart anyway so the gap between is always full of poop (that the dogs eat) and hay.  Aime pees in normal wheels and then gets it all over her back so she has smelly spiky fur until several daily dust baths later.

That's strange for a chinchilla to pee anywhere but in a designated corner. You may want to investigate that if you haven't.

She usually pees sitting on her house which is rather annoying.  If the house is too close to the side of the cage she'll end up spraying backward out of the cage.  Sometimes she changes it up and pees off a shelf or her wheel.  She doesn't seem to like peeing while on the ground.

I recommend looking up this topic. Usually chinchillas will pee in one spot in their cage once they have an established place to do this. Here is an article that might help you.
