Will a baby chinchilla get along with an adult
« on: March 22, 2015, 12:39:28 PM »

I have an adult male chinchilla, he is about 8 years old. I've been thinking about getting a new chinchilla recently, preferably a girl. I was looking into getting a baby girl chinchilla but will a baby be compatible with an adult male or would it be better off to get a chinchilla around the same age as mine? Mine has been around 2 other chinchillas in his lifetime (they were my friend's chinchillas, both girls) One of them he got along great with, they would cuddle and clean each other but the other one he fought with. So if I get another chin should I go with a baby or an adult, and would a girl or boy be better?

Is he neutered?  It would be very bad to stick a baby female with an intact male.  Putting an adult male and female together should be done with careful consideration to what resulting offspring you will get.  Otherwise you need to get a 2nd male.  Some chinchillas just won't share the cage with anyone so there is always that risk but usually babies are easier to introduce than adults.

Are you trying to breed?

I would like to breed in the future. But it's not what I'm trying to do, I mainly just want another chin because I love them so much, and it would help mine not get lonely while I'm at college during the day.

I strongly recommend getting another male or you will be breeding. And that comes with a big responsibility. Female chins should be at least a year old before putting with a male. Preferably any chinchilla you breed should come from a reputable breeder with a pedigree. I also highly recommend finding an experienced local breeder that can mentor you.

Breeding isn't something to take lightly.

Get him a male buddy. Adult or kit won't make a difference. The over all personality is what will make or break it
