Chinchilla with Matted Hair
« on: November 12, 2006, 10:15:44 PM »

:-\  I have never seen or heard of a matt in a chins coat before.  I just got a beautiful white mosaic female chin from a young woman who could no longer care for her.  Her coat is beautiful and dense but she has got a nice big matt on her back end.  Thank goodness it is not right up against the skin.  Any suggestions as to how to handle this?    ::shrug::
I spoke to a rancher who said it really needs to just be very quickly pulled out.  It should not be combed out or cut out.
I am just nervous to pull this thing out!  It's going be a quick moment of ouch for her  :'(

I did have one come up with a matt under her belly once when she was sick.  I was able to comb it out but it took a few sessions of about five minutes at a time, over the course of a couple of days.  It eventually loosened and just came completely out.  It didn't seem to hurt the chin, so much as annoy her that I wanted her to sit still and let me comb her.  And it didn't leave an awful bald spot like I thought it would.

I think it depends on how patient the chin is and how bad the matt is.  I have some who will sit still for fairly long periods of time while I comb them, and I have some who will not tolerate it for any period of time no matter what I do.

I've been wondering if this works on chinchillas but I've not yet had the chance to try...
With cats and dogs, you can take corn starch and rub it into the matted hair to get rid of the mat.  If you happen to try it and it works, let me know!   :)

I have found if it's matted it's probably already let go from the skin and can be pluck or just picked out.
Combing would do the same, for one clump, I'd just pick away at it until it was gone.
I have a funny story about such.
When I first got my late Cody he has a matted clump on his back down by his tail, and his owner was calling it, jokingly his extra tail.
After he had adjusted to living here I took a little pluck at it and out it came, extra tail gone. She said he had it for years. rofl

;D THAT is too funny Debbie, I love it!  OK well Lilo has one of those same exact extra tails too!    I'm going to do like you did and give her some time to adjust to living here.  Then,  "poof" & off with that pesky old extra tail.    :D
