Playing in the ball?
« on: November 28, 2006, 05:28:59 PM »

Does anyone have as much success as we do with our baby boy Max?

He runs everywhere and is very disappointed if he does  not get his playtime around 7 PM!  It is so much fun to watch!  He actually comes when called and it is difficult to get him out when we want him to.  I just get nervous because I don't want him overexerted.  He does about 100 miles a night on the wheel too!

I used to use the giant runabout balls, until one of my chins figured out if she got going fast enough she could run into the wall and crack the ball open, then lead us on a merry chase all over the house!  After a few times of that happening we decided to just use a playpen for them.

Too funny.  I know Max does about 50 mph into the wal but the ball has stood up to him!  I guess I will have to monitor his attempts!  Thanks!

Keep an eye on him...chins can overheat easily in the runabout balls.  I, personally, don't like them, but use one only when I'm cleaning Lucien's cage and to carry him upstairs for playtime if he's being too fussy about being handled.

::silly::Always make sure you keep a close eye on your chin when he/she is in one of those balls.  They are not a temporary chinchilla-setter for you.
If they come to rest in an area where the sun is shining in on it, it will heat up as quickly as a car in the summer heat.  Same goes if it comes to rest on a heat vent or register.
Sometimes they get it going so fast that they will get themselves stuck and/or pop it open.
Always make sure the doors to the outside, down the steps and to the basement are closed.
Cleaning it after each use, is a must.
Always get the "Jumbo", not the Giant size.  The jumbo is 15" in diameter ... a minimum diameter in a wheel and a ball for a chin not to cause spine damage.
Never take your chin outside in a ball ... it can break-open and/or over heat a chin in minutes.

Don't you find that they poop tons in those balls and they just roll around in them?  I had one for a while but when I had to start dumping out 20 or 30 poops after they were finished, I decided to stop using the ball.  The sound of 30 rolling poops isn't pleasant....  ::)

Leslie you are so right about the poops!  However Max is ADDICTED to the freedom and the fun.  He even knows when he gets out of the ball that I must clean all the poops off hiom before he can continue to play in his cage.  He is cool that way!

I took in a rescue that loved his ball.Knew just what to do with it, when to turn, but never got it opened.
I did try other in it too. Some hated it, some just couldn't figure it out, and after having their own room they thought it was a rip off. :D
I don't like them either, for all the same reasons, plus some have peed in it.
I don't use it anymore, gave it away I think.
