Sick chinchilla
« on: July 01, 2016, 04:56:02 PM »

I got me chin 2 weeks ago he only about 3-4 months old and I noticed in the first week he was sneezing a lot then I noticed his breathing became heavy and harder and he started getting little cuts on his nose from wiping so I tuck him the vets and he had a upper respiratory tract infection and he has been on antibiotics now for 5 days and at first I noticed he had a bit more energy but the past 2 nights all he has done is sleep he is still eating and drinking but all he dose is sleep and his breathing is till quick fast and heavy then tonight when I went to get him from under the coffee table were he loves to sleep he couldn't open one of his eyes so i tuck a closer look and when i picked him up he op end it there was loads of white goo I thought the antibiotics would of made him better the only this that has changed is he doesn't sneeze as much but I am still very worried

I'm so sorry to hear this. Respiratory infections can be very dangerous to chinchillas. You need to make sure he is getting the right amount of medicine at the right time.I also recommend that you call your vet and tell him what you are seeing. He may need to see your pet again and chances are he will need to increase the dose. If the vet has instructed you to give him medicine for ten days make sure you don't miss any days even if your pet is feeling better.

Tell your vet that antibiotics are known to cause GI stasis in chinchillas. Make sure he gives you what is needed to syringe feed your pet and complete instructions. Then make sure your pet is eating normally. You may want to ask about supplementing with baytril as well, a probiotic.

I'm concerned your chinchilla does not live in a cage. There are many poisonous things around that he could have gotten into as well. Does he have a cage? Does your vet know he sleeps outside of his cage?

Also understand your pet is in a very serious condition at this time and needs help.

Yes he's got a cage we just let him out for a few hours every night that's why I thought he was getting better because the first 3 days he had loads of energy like av never seen before then past 2 times we've let him out he is just sleeping he's loves sleeping and sitting Under the coffee table and we only let him out when we out there so I no he hasn't eaten anything I got him from a pet shop and when I noticed he was sick I rang them and said I want to no his bread er so I can get in touch Because  he has came to me sick then it turns out he was imported from Europe to a wholesalers then to the pet were I went and got him so he has been though a lot I can't even imagine the conditions and it's no wonder he is sick! He is still getting used to being handled also like he will let me pet him but no one else not even my partner but he doesn't like being picked up so to keep the trust between us I have been putting his medicine on a little bit of bread or a little bit of a biscuit when I say little I mean little just to get him to eat it could this be affecting the affect of the antibiotics I am defiantly going to take him to the vets also av read that they have allergies so can you get antihistamines for chinchillas?

Please stop giving treats. They are going to cause a lot of harm to the intestines and generate gas which will inflate the bowels and pinch them off against each other. This can turn into an obstruction and become fatal very quickly.
You need to talk to your vet today if you want to save him. If it is GI stasis he should be getting additional drugs to help things get going but you must also be syringe feeding a special diet that is designed just for this.
If you do not act now you are going to lose him. Respiratory infections and antibiotics can be factors that cause chins to stop eating. Your pet needs to be in a cage where you can monitor his food, his water, and his fecal output or you will not be able to care for him properly.

I see a lot of red flags in your post.

If your chin is not eating and you suspect stasis, you need to be at a vet now. Waiting will reduce the chance of saving your chin.

At 4 months old your chin should not be getting any treats. None at all. They are not mature enough to handle them and it can lead to bloat and stasis quickly, as well as seizures and even death.

Your chin should not have playtime till he is over 7 months old. They can not regulate their body temps till they are adults. Over heating can kill a chin and lead to bowel problems. It can also stunt growth.

What meds were you given for the upper respiratory infection? Are you giving him any probiotics? Those are important to repopulate the bowel after medications

I'm very sorry this happened. I do feel bad for you. Please do not think we are being overly critical in any way and we tried to provide the best advice possible. Respiratory illnesses are usually fatal once contracted even with treatment. Please don't feel too bad.
