New Chinchilla Mommy
« on: March 16, 2017, 04:52:35 PM »

Hello, I'm kris and my Daughter and I just adopted 2 9month old chinchillas. My chin is Mira and my daughters is Dove. they are absolutely adorable. we've switched there stuff up a bit, the people we got them from just had a basic set up for their cage with a medium plastic hut, a plastic litter box and a few salt licks and that's about it in their cage... we removed the plastic hut and litter pan... not even gonna try to litter train them. and put in a nice , large wooden hidey hut for them to cuddle in and be their "safe place" ive also put in pine shavings in the litter tray under the floor of the cage and ordered some leaping ledges. we also just got their silent spinner in Sunday and they love it. dove likes to run more then mira . hopefully the ledges get here soon so I can take out the middlewire rack and the rest of the plastic ledges. also got them  a hammock and some hanging wood chews. they absolutely love the hammock. a few extra wooden chews and a loufa chew and also a lava ledge.. I also switched their food up a bit. the previous mommy had them on food that had lots of raisins and such so I fazed it out into the premium oxbo pellets. and some nice Timothy Hay as well... they seem much happier. if anyone has any other ideas or tips for me, it would be much appreciated! thank you all so much!

Looks like you're doing really well there with your setup. Good choice of diet. No chinchilla diet should contain raisins or anything like that. My only recommendation is remove the ramps. Your pets won't need them and it will be one less thing to cause trouble.
Your pets should limit their urine to the tray with the pine chips in it. Other than that there is no real litter training chinchillas apart from that but as you know droppings their are dry and relatively inoffensive.

My biggest tip for someone with multiple chins is to make sure they never start pulling hair or show signs of physically attacking each other. If that happens divide the cage and separate. Have two food dishes available and monitor water consumption daily. If the water isn't going down you know there's a problem with your water dispenser.

That's all off the top of my head but feel free to ask questions.

they're sisters from the same litter, atleast that's what I was told and seem to get along fairly fine.. they're also eating pretty well aswell. I got the ledges Tuesday and installed them tonight. they seem to really like the open space much better an now, no more plastic at all. :-)
