I am stumped here and hoped that somebody could help.
We have a set of twin standard boys that we took in from the SPCA last year.  They are very active and full of energy, probably our wildest of all the chins!  Last night I noticed a rippled look to the fur on each of their lower hind quarters, like around the lower back and hip area.  WHen I got them still enough to check out I saw lots of their hair missing!!!  I mean like patches 1" in several spots.
The skin where the hair is missing is beautiful.  It is very healthy looking, no scabs, crust or fungus looking areas.  So what could be going on here?  I have not seen any fur biting at all but that doesn't mean anything either.  And they both have fur missing in the same areas.  Could they be pulling fur from eachother or one of them is pulling from both?
Nothing unusual has happened here that could have stressed them that I am aware of.  We have had them for about one year now and they are very settled in..
Each of them is eating, drinking and seems to be acting in a normal as usual fashion.
Hmmmmmmmm, I am stumped.
What else causes fur loss in chins?

It could be excessive fur pulling.  My rescue Charlie will do that.  We had to move him out of the house and into the chinchilla building for a few months because our home a/c broke.  The temperature has been so crazy that we just have been able to bring him back into the house.  He was so upset at being removed from the house he pulled a huge spot of fur across one shoulder and under one arm.  (He also had that fur missing when he was surrendered to us.) I am just now starting to see new fur peak through again.

 I have only seen a few chinchillas that will pull the fur right out rather than chew it off but that sounds like what you have.  It does leave beautiful skin underneath like you say.

I have seen this bald look in a few that shimmy behind or between things.
Some chew the shelf close to the door and shimmy up between. One had the back of his neck cleaned off as he would tilt his head back over the shelf as he shimmied up on it.
Another got to fat for his house and cleaned off his sides getting in and out.
All was corrected and the fur grew back just fine.
Could they be pulling off like that some how?

On this topic I have a question.
I have two fat females with thinning spots under their arms where the little fat rolls are.
The skin looks good, and their are some hairs left, it's just thinning???
Anyone see this before?

maybe from the constant rubbing?

Perhaps they are both slipping fur in that area as they mount each other to try to determine dominance?
