We recently introduced a one year old female to a 4 year old male.  Supervised visits out of the cages only.  During the first time we had them out together, they would get spooked by each other and run away.  The third time, Jewels stood up on her hind legs and looked like she was trying to kick Jed.  Jed started chasing her so we caught them and put them away for the night, but when I caught Jed he had pee on his head.  I think that Jewels peed on Jed, but we don't know why.  Does anyone know what this means?

Sparying is something chins do when they are trying to defend themselfs. You may just want to try sitting the cages next to each other for a week or two, maybe even a month. Letting them get use to seeing and smelling each other. Take small steps & keep a sharp eye chins can hurt each other and that can get costly in time, money and emotion. Some chins may not ever get along. Milkshakes & Luna hate each other for no reason. Best of luck with your chins. Have a Happy New year!!!

When a female sprays a male it is a definite sign of dislike or intimidation.  She may have felt threatened or just upset at being confronted with a stranger.  I would also recommend leaving them in spearate cages next to one another.  I would switch them back and forth between the cages every few days, and also give dust baths to one and then offer the same dust to the other, so they get used to each others' smells.

By the way, when she "stood up on her hind legs and looked like she was trying to kick Jed." that was when she was spraying him with urine.  Females have very good aim and a surprising range!

Thank you so much for the advice.  Their cages are next to each other and I will trade the dust bath tonight!

I find when females spray the males it's to let him know she is boss.
I take this as a better sign than if they just attacked each other.
What I mean is I have found that this behavior is a normal ritual with some new pairings. It's the fighting I worry about.
Now tell me if I'm totally off base gals, I'm only going by what I see, and have no problem being told I'm not right, or out to lunch
Keep doing what your doing, cages side by side, and trying them with runs and baths together.
If there is no all out fighting, fur flying, or casing things should go pretty smoothly.
I fine the ones that can't stand the sight of each other the hardest to pair, but not impossible.
The best is when they fall in love right from the start.

Is the male doing the "Swish, Swish Tail Dance" ?   

For those of you that have no idea what I am talking about, it is a matting ritual the male goes through.   

Usually as the female goes into season, the male takes notice and gets anxious ... 
He will do a little hop, hop, then swish his tail from side to side and repeat it several times ...
even the expression on his face is priceless.
This is a, "Can I? Can I?"
Her spraying him is a firm "No!"  (She is not yet in full season.)
If he is persistant, she can spray him so many times you think she drank all the water in the bottle at one time.     When this fails, she will give him a run for his money and can inflict major damage, should he insist. 

He will continue to do the little dance off and on, until she is in full season and gives him permission. 
Very persistant little fellas.    

I have one little Casanova that does the "Swish, Swish Tail" dance back and forth in the front of his cage any time any of the females in the same room are in season ... guess this is why I can 't get him to gain any weight.

I have several that will do that Jo Ann.They even dribble on the shelves when the gals are primed.
I feel bad for them some days, but it's so cute to watch.
They'll run the side of the cage where the gal is, whine and chirp and just kick up a stink until her cycle has ended.
