Pregnancy Info
« on: January 01, 2007, 10:17:58 AM »

Hi I read on a different thread from Joann that the signs of pregnancy are

 1) Weight gain
 2) sleeping on her side
 3) fur around the teats falling away
 4) longer, pinker teats
 5) amount of food eaten should increase
 6) often a mood change
 7) amount of water increases just before delivery
Cool flatten out on the bottom of the cage with some rapid breathing
 9) doing what looks like stretching exercises
10) cleaning her self more than normal
11) discharge
Most of these will apply most of the time, but not always.
Jo Ann

In more advanced labor, do yøu mean discharge as slight spotting of blood?  Do they actually have a water sac to break like we do when it becomes imminent, do the kits move down into the vaginal vault as do human babies?
Pookah is REALLY looking pregnant and awful uncomfortable.  she had some light spotting last night and her rump is a little more oblong than normal.   I think by the gestation calendar we had her due today!

Any advice?

Okey dokey.....just got home from work and checked in on Pook.  So far there are 2 really cute babies; don't know the sex yet but one is standard and the other is beige.  Will check again in awhile to see if there are more.  These guys moust have been born awhile ago as both were very dry.  Pook looks good though; eating like a.. a... horse!  Will get pics later today.

Congrats, I guess you were seeing the signs, cool eh!
Yes the female I just had deliver in Christmas day was eating so much she would snatch, not just grab treats from me. Like a savage she was, it's calmed down some now.
Most mine give birth at dawn or dusk, dawn usually.
Can't wait for pics. ::nod::

Ok as promised here are the pic of Pookahs twins.  One is a dark standard and the other is light beige.  So cute!  We don't have names yet as we didn't want to disturb thenm too much today with trying to sex them.  Will do that in the morning.  We're gonna let everyone rest tonight.  I think besides Pook, this was hardest on Loki as he kept a vigilant watch over her.  He was even scolding us this afternoon when we tried ot take them out.  And he's not even the daddy!   :D

What cuties!

To answer your question, chinchillas do not have their "water break" like humans do.

::shrug::  Hmmmmmm, I thought sometimes a pregnant chin's membranes ruptured before her
kit(s) were born.  Last July when Mia's 2 kits were born her water broke before each kit arrived.  Each time there was an enormous soaked spot covering a quite large area in her Carefresh bedding.

I suppose I should have explained it a bit better...  Yes, the placental water sacks will break, but it's not generally as noticable as when a human's water breaks.

;)  Oh OK!!!  Thanks.  I started thinking that I had missed something there for a minute, and wondered what that gush of liquid coming from her was  :blush2:
I am by NO means an expert or anywhere near it!  We have only had one litter in our years of chinchilla ownership.  Our first and last!   :-\  My nerves can't do it again!
