I have a mother and baby n the cage together so I am not sure who is doing ts.  I have a shallow heart shaped bowl, pink for the girl  and blue for the boy.  They seem to be peeing in them and I am throwing away a lot of food.  Does anyone know why they are doing this?  I keep moving it to different locations and they always pee in it.  Helpful insight wold be appreciated.

If your food bowl sites on the floor your chinchillas will keep peeing in them.  Almost all chinchillas will pee in a food dish on the floor.   

I would suggest getting a food dish that hands on the side of the cage.  Hook it at the right hight to your adult chinchilla so that if she is standing up on her back feet the food bowl would be right at her hand level.  Don't worry about the baby, she will jump up to get her food.

This should solve the pee problem.

Thank you sooo much I will use one of my parrot crocks ant attach them to the side.  I didn't think the baby wold be able to get to it but what was I tinking.  He bounced all over the place.  Thank you again, I appreciate the help.

Hey, Jamie, the hanging bowl or cup is good for most of the chins, but I have a few that will pee in even them.  If it's weird, I have it.   So far (keep your fingers crossed for me) none have peed in the "J" feeders yet ... of course since I said it ... there's probably one doing that right now.   

    You might think about putting a small amount of bedding in the bowls and letting them have little potties in their cage ... many people beg to have a chin that is potty trained.  (This works only for urinating ... poop is any where and every where they go.) :-[

All of my bowls are on the floor and I rarely have a problem with them getting peed in. The differance may be that my cages are all flat bottom so they can pee directly into the litter. You might want to get a pan that you can fill with wood chips that they can pee into, sort of like a litter box.

I think the difference is just the individual chins.  I only have 8 wire bottom cages and 74 solid bottom cages ... I keep bedding in all of them and only a hand full of the 200 I have pee in the cups, most do not. :-[

Different stokes for different chins yes
Some will spend more time throwing the dishes around the cage if I don't screw them on.
I too have to move them around, fixing them to different places for each cage of chins.
I like the those little candle holders with an opening in the side for the candle, I put feed or hay. They can sit in the top were you would put the scents, and most have a neck there somewhere that I can wrap a wire around and attach to the cage.

I find a tune fish can screwed to the cage as good as any, but this one is fun.
Some I can put pellets in the top and hay in the bottom.
Bakolite{not sure on spelling} plastics work great too.

Old mugs and tuna fish cans, anything with a handle, or if I can drill a hole it gets screwed on.

    Neat!  I love all the different ideas and the 'not same old routine' thing!

    Tell me your secret ... why don't your chins chew the plastic?  80% of my chins would have the plastic gone in no time!

    Don't they drag around anything that is not anchored down?   

    CAUTION:  The heavy ceramic feeding bowls that have straight sides ... I have found a few kits under them when I turn them back up-right ... lucky all have been in time, so I haven't lost any kits due to this.  :-[

     All our cages have "J" feeders now.

All the dishes are fastened to the cage, either screwed on or wired on. Anything with kind of neck like the candle holder I twist a piece of crafters wire around and then fasten it to the cage.
Mine will eat most plastics too Jo Ann, but it's the old fashion bakolite plastic they just can't. I drill a hole in it and screw it on.
Small steel bowls are great too, just drill a hole and screw it on.

Yes chinchillagrl I buy them all at thrift shops, my favorite place for chin stuff.

I had a problem with a chnchilla peeing on it's dish. I found that the best way to prevent them from doing this is to make it inconvenient for them to pee in the dish. I have an attached crock and put a sleep-n-ledge above it so they can't easily back into the dish and pee in it. There was just enough room for them to eat their pellets, but not enough for them to sit on the dish. Once they get used to not peeing there, you can take the ledge out if you like.
