Average weight gain during pregnancy?
« on: January 23, 2007, 11:45:09 AM »

Of course, I'm not sure there is such a thing, but I was wondering from your experiences what the average chinchilla weight gain during pregnancy is.  I have a female that has gained 70g so far but I'm not seeing any of the "near the end" signs either.  I'm sitting here impatiently, almost like watching a pot boil, and I know what they say about that!

I know it depends on the number of kits and everything, but from all you experienced people, what weight gain do you normally see?

She is staying well reserved in her house, and I certainly don't want to traumatize her by seeing if she'll sit on my lap and let me see if kits move.  So I just let her be.

They should gain about 60-80 grams per kit, at leats for the first one. It will be a little less for each addition one.

Do you know the due date?

Nope :(  That's what Im trying to get an idea of.  I want to make sure that I am holding the dust baths and things right before she delivers.  And that she gets the appropriate supplements.  Heck, I guess I don't even really know that she IS pregnant, but packing on a weight gain of 70g I would have to assume so.  I will keep watching her and as soon as I see more of the signs of being towards then end then I will start the appropriate precautions!

Like I said she doesn't want to sit on my lap and is very reserved, so I don't want to stress her out by trying to get her to do so.  But I don't see anything else like the elongated nipples or babies moving when she is lying, etc.

Thanks for the help Debbie :)  Gives me an estimate to go by!

Most welcome,
Sounds like early stages to me , maybe 6-8 weeks.
Give it another few and you'll know for sure, but sounds like a good possibility to me.
