Chinchilla emergency kit
« on: February 03, 2007, 10:20:45 AM »

Ok I live in a hurricane area . I am about 15 minutes from the beach and we do get storms here . Well it tis the season again soon SO I have been getting the survival stuff together . well Last year we had Our kit one for the dog and one for my hermit crabs just in case .

This year I am making one for chico. So far I have water . extra hay . some pellets all these are in water proof containers. Now often after a hurricane its humid and we dont have electric . However we have a generator (it wont run the ac though) .Its very very humid . So I am going to get a fan and.... I see this thing at the pet store. Its called a chin chiller. What it is , is a piece of granite ... a thin sheet of it that stays cool . He can stand on it and cool himself down.

I dont want him to get too hot and I will have extra dust bath on hand .

am I forgeting anything ?

 ;)  Hi there,

I hope this can help you!  We live in a hurricane area too, right on the water.  Where do you all live?     http://www.chinchillaclub.com/members/mag/0406evac.html

::silly::Hi,
It's only $10 a year to be a member in the Chinchilla Club and well worth it!
Joyce had a wonderful article on the evacuation kits, part of it is as follows:
The following is a General Supply List that may help you.

• Travel crates
• Water bottles
• Chinchilla Pelleted Food
• Timothy Hay and Hay Cubes
• Bottled / Jugs of Drinking Water
• Small Food Bowls for Pellets
• Hanging Treat / Hay Balls for Hay
• Treats and Chews
• Bedding
• Dust Bath Containers and Dust
• Small Animal Exercise Pen
• 15” Exercise Wheel
• Small Huts or Chube Tubes for hiding
• Trash Bags
• Antibac Wet Ones Hand wipes / Baby wipes
• Ziploc Bags & Containers to store supplies
• Paper Towels
• Medical Supplies
• First Aid Kit

I think you would enjoy reading the article.

Also, you might think about getting a 4" PVC pipe from the plumbing department ... in the shape of a "Y" or a "T"  the plastic tends to stay cooler and is a good hide-a-way for them.  It is the only 'safe' plastic for chinchillas.

Over where the rock/tile is, there should be an "entrance" strip (usually made of thick marble) about 4 or 5 inches wide and 30" to 60" long ... if you get them to cut it into 6" to 10" pieces,  it will make several chin-chiller stones for you.  If you store them out of the sunlight and in the coolest place you can find, they will retain the coolness much longer and can be swapped out.
