Chinchilla Herd Software
« on: March 08, 2007, 08:41:31 PM »

Just wondering if anyone here uses software to help manage their herd and pedigrees and the likes.  I saw there was three main ones, I was debating between ZooEasy and Evans.  I like ZooEasy because you can keep track of things like their weights, and actually graph it so you can see a trend (useful in pregnant chins, sick chins, etc) but I dont like the way the pedigrees are done, they put the Sire on top and Dam on the bottom, so I get all confused  ???

Then Evans has nice pedigrees that are even color coded and mapped out, but then it doesn't have like the weight tracking abilities and things like that.  ::)

Why can't the best of both worlds be in one software program?  ::tickedoff::

So I was wondering if anyone on here used either of these softwares, and if you do what you like and don't like about them.  I gotta make a decision soon on which one I'm going to use soon!  Otherwise Im going to have a mound of chin information to enter all at once.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

You are in luck.....Maybe!
My husband is a computer wiz.....
He wrote me a program to keep track of my critters....it is pretty well in detail with keeping pedigrees (ancestry tree)...colors...male...female...weight....etc.
If you might be interested....we can talk!     ;)

::silly::I have the Evens and like it ... just wish I'd had it years ago ... try putting in all the information and back history on almost 200 chins!   ::wacko::  I'm still working on it.   :wildeyes:

 ::think::  I've never heard of the ZooEasy ... where could I find that?

 ;)  Janice, your hubby might make a mint on that ... I'd love to see what he's come up with for you.

BTW ~ Are you going to the MCBA Nationals March 23rd & 24th?

Janice, oh I'd also be very interested to see what your husband came up with for you!  Like I said, I like features of both of them, and I just didn't know which one to go with!  And I thought it was pretty redundant to purchase both and enter the information twice for all the features.

Jo Ann, you can download a trial of ZooEasy (or just view screenshots and read about it if you'd like) at www.zooeasy.com They have various types of the software, chinchillas are just one of them :)

I have Evans and love it!!  He is such a nice man and he will take requests.  There are free updates all the time with items people have suggested.  Why don't you give him a call or an email and ask if the weight chart idea can be added.

I will talk with Jim to see if there is a way we can send out a sample.  It works very easy.  I am NOT that computer smart!  He has everything listed .....such as which space to put Dam and Sire.....that always confuses me filling out the forms where the females and males go...who comes first (if they are not labeled and all numbers)!  Like I said....I get confused very easily these days!    :-\

Jo Ann....we are trying to get the funds to go to the National show.....I would love to come!  If we don't I will sit at home and cry all weekend!   :'(

I've built my mangement software right into my website. Manages family trees, generates pedigrees. Does breeding calculation probabilties. I've actually been thinking about trying to market it.

::silly::    Null ... I went to your website .... very nice set-up ... does it take-up much space on the net? On your computer?
    How many chins do you have?

    Sounds like we have several out there that make up their own systems for keeping up with their chins and the different generations ... wish I were that talented.   ::)

    I have the Evans and love it ... just got to figure out how to get it to quit printing out the colors on the backgrounds ... it's drinking my ink like a thirsty puppy right after a long walk.  I've checked the settings on my computer and it does not print the other backgrounds I print out, just certain sections on the Evans' system. Any one else have that problem?  There's got to be a way to make the edges of the boxes colored, but not the background inside of them!

The site is at my hosting company and their service is about 5 dollars a month for it. The actual data for the site is only a few kilobytes. I would probably need about 2000 chins before I'd have to upgrade to a larger database. I've got 14 chins right now, but with a few modifications I could make the site scale to thousands.

JoAnn,
Click on any one of your chinchillas in the program and choose to view the pedigree. Then you'll see the 8 buttons in the upper Left-hand corner.  Click on the one that has a picture of a wrench on it (bottom left button).  That will pull up a screen that will allow you to customize your print outs.  You can even color coordinate your boxes depending on the chinchilla's color if you want to!!

::silly::Thanks, Jamie!

It works wonderfully now ... my ink budget thanks you, too!

I like the breeding cards, also ... all the information right there on the cage.

 :::grins::  very happy now    ::nod::
