Hi guys & gals,
I have been working a new site for Newfoundlanders and chinchillas.
I have put up a couple of video clips on them getting back in there cage when the timer goes off.
It's hard to hear the timer with the radio going, but we can hear it.
The first clip the female Teaser jump back before the camera kicked in, but her cage mate is right behind her.
In the second one you can see Dakota getting ready for the bell, he's knows about when his time is up.T he wants to play with me some. Makes it more obvious. They do know what the timer means, and what is waiting for them.
Though sometimes they would rather play with me, and you can see on the end of the tape Dakota trying to make a break for the door again.
Pretty smart little buggers.

Very cool.
We don't have a timer, but Cheech generally goes back in after half an hour, I've been really lucky with him.

I love the videos!!!  I've never seen one go back in the cage on command ... to bad we are far apart ... I could get one of your chins to train my chins.   

Chins can learn lots of things, if you take the time with them.       They love to please and love to be the center of attention!

My chins wont go back in the cage unless I force them LOL.  But thats awesome that you can train yours.  Maybe I can send my chins to "Debbie obedience school"?  LOL

Oh that's too funny.
I have 30 chins, - {7 kits+3 rescues + 1 that can't unless his cage is right on the floor} = 19 chins that will do it.
I'm working on a few more now.
All the others will how ever run for the bath bottle, so it takes me no time getting them back.
That used to be what I spent most of my time at.

I find that a fresh dust bath or a piece of fruit being wiggled in the doorway works quite well too, but not as well as your way Debbie. How do you start the training?

It started by letting them get out on their own.
If they could get down on the stools, then they could get back.
Knowing a treat was waiting sure helps. I guess that's what got them doing it in the first place.
Once I has so many, 20+ I had to start using a timer, or I'd get carried away with one run and the last bunch would end up with short runs.
They soon learned what the timer meant.
Most just followed and learned from the rest, but some I have to physically catch them and place them from stool too stool saying up up. After a while most will know what to do as soon as I say up, then as soon as the timer goes off.
The kits and a few who don't yet will run too the tapping of the bath bottle.
It was all an attempt to keep the stress of catching them down.
Some runs/play time are of 4 or 5 chins, and they would all run in different directions making catching them and putting them back stressfull for all of us.

With Trixie, I use her pet carrier to get her to and from her play area.  I keep her cage in the living room, but there are too many places for her to get hurt, or in trouble to let her run free in the house.  So, I have a room as a dedicated playroom for her.  When she sees me bring the carrier out, she knows it is time to go out, and will wait by the cage door, then hop into the carrier.
I then leave the carrier on the floor of her play room.  After about a half hour or hour, she will run back to her carrier and hop inside, letting me know she is ready to go home.  Lately, if I do not respond right away, she will jump out of the carrier, and into my lap, then back down to the carrier.  So it is more that we have trained each other.
