I found this website explaining how to make a wire wheel safe for hamsters:

Obviously if you did this for a chinnie they would have more fun ripping the newspaper off and eating the dangerous stickytape that running on it, but it made me wonder: Could we come up with a similar process that would be safe for chinchillas? Maybe using very thin sheets of pine that can be bent?

Even with modification, that wheel isn't safe for any animal.  It has a spoke that can break or cut off appendages if the animal attempts to jump out while the wheel is still moving.   :noway:

Are you looking for a safe wheel?  Go for the flying saucer wheel!  It's the greatest chinchilla invention ever made.

Cheech doesn't have enough room in his cage for a wheel with all his toys, shelves, boxes and the new rope I just bought him. :)
I thought it looked cool but you guys have said it's not safe, so never mind.

It's too bad there isn't enough room for a wheel.  I didn't think that my guys would like their wheels as much as they do.  I have a silver surfer wheel in one cage and the flying saucer in the other, and they both run miles on those things every day.  I would say it's the most important thing in their cage, besides their food, water and hay!

I really do want to get him one but it's hard to get a good quality wheel in the UK. I wouldn't want to get him anything less than perfect. When we move house hopefully next year We're planning on getting a chinchilla room and maybe a mate for Cheech. Definitely we will be getting him a bigger cage and then I might have to import a wheel even if it does cost an arm and a leg.
His all time favourite toy is cardboard boxes and tubes which he rips up. He does leave ripped up bits all over the cage and makes it look like I haven't cleaned him out for ages... maybe we should have a toys thread where we can all say what toys our chins have, how much they like them and the merits of each one.

Hi guys - we too are huge Flying Saucer fans but we also have a solid 15" wheel that our chin loves, we made sure it went against one of the walls so that nothing scary could happen to him and he has been without incident for over a year.  He uses the wheel as a way to talk to us too!  "I want attention", "I want to eat", "I want to play" etc...

It is a larger up and down wheel but if you can put it in the corner you should be safe.

This wheel has the same problem with the spokes.  It isn't safe.

Not sure I like the modifications.  Too much of a temptation to chew..and a risk for the little feet getting caught.

We had considered the flying saucer wheel..but decided to go for the large aluminum wheel.  Runs on ball bearings, so it is sturdy, as well as fairly quiet when she starts running madly in it. Plus, it sometimes serves as a nap area for her..she likes to sleep in it.
