What is a black chinchilla?
« on: June 25, 2006, 08:38:38 PM »

::silly:: What is a black chinchilla?

This is not a trick question!  When referring to a black chinchilla, you are not referring to an ebony chinchilla ... that's a different group.

The original chinchillas were gray with white bellies and were called "standard" grays because they are the original color of all chinchillas.

Then along came the Black Velvets or TOV (meaning 'touch of velvet') referred to as a "black".  They had a veil of black over the face and top of the back, blending down to a gray side, then to a white belly.  The 'TOV' refers to the pattern and what it looks like.

Who can tell us the name of the man that the blacks are named after?  And the year it happened.    ::)

::silly::Mr. Gunning is still into chinchillas and sometimes gives seminars on his work with chinchillas ... I believe he had one this past year with the MCBA.

Wish I could have gone, but I couldn't  :'( ... Maybe next time!   :::grins::
