Containers for food, hay, etc.
« on: May 24, 2007, 12:07:02 PM »

I was just wondering what everyone recommends to store pellets, hay, and dust in. Right now my hay is in a grocery brown bag, my dust is in a plastic bin and I keep my pellets in the original feed bag. Any recommendations?

::silly::Hay needs to breathe, it is usually best to keep it in a container with a few air holes.  Store it on top of something, not in the floor or where bugs might decide to get into it.  Or where it would be exposed to moisture ... hay can mold easily.

Pellets are best stored in an air-tight container.  Some of the pet stores have ones that look like the PVC pipe (white with specks in it) plastic.  They have a screw on lid so that it air-tight.  This, also, should be stored off of the floor.  Preferrably in the coolest part of the house.

Dust bath dust should be kept in an airtight container, also.

I keep a bail of hay in the garage in a large open cardboard box up on pallets to keep it off the floor a tad.
My pellets I move from the feed bags to covered containers, more for ease of use. If you seal up the bag again it should keep fine. My pellets have a zip lock top, but I keep tipping the bag over, so I use containers and a measuring scoop.
Same with the dust.
We get sugar in nice 4Lt containers, I recycle them for feed & dust.
