Jamie, that is one of the sweetest photos I have ever seen!  That momma looks so content and her baby is just adorable sticking out under her like she is.  The baby's ears add to the whole thing!  Glad you posted this, it makes me all the more excited to be a chin granny soon!!!!

Those ears do make the picture don't they!!  rofl
I should mention that she is a beautiful, normal looking chinchilla when her ears aren't pushed forward like that.  In the picture she looks like a mouse!

I love having a camera in the chin building with me cause you just never know what you are going to see!

P.S.  Its great to have you back on the boards.  I've missed you!!! ::fruit::

::silly:: Hi Jamie,

     How precious!!!   Is the kit a black velvet?  The black and white contrast really makes them standout together.   :::grins::

     When you see them like that, you don't know if you just want to stand there and enjoy it, or pick them both up and give them kisses!   ::nod::

Yep, the baby is a black velvet.  The Mom is a Pink White who I now realize is also TOV (hence the black velvet baby!!)  Her fur looks horrible in the picture.  She needs a good grooming.

hi

chinclub, i have a quick question..... if the mom is a pink white, then how is the baby a black velvet? or does the color of the mother have nothing to do with the color of the babies???

::silly::Hi Chinny Girl,

    This is a perfect example of why you need to know your chin's family history!

     I have a pair ... Mom is a standard gray and dad is a white mosaic ... in one of their litters, they had a black velvet ... come to find out the great grandmother of the kit was a black velvet.

    The black velvet gene was carried by the great grandmother's kits, the grandmother's kits and the children's kits, but did not "show up" again until the third generation.

    The kit's color is determined by both parents, all four grandparents, all eight  great grandparents and even futher back, sometimes.

     You will not always "see" all the different genes a chin may be carrying, but sooner or later, there will be a kit born that will let you know.   rofl

     It is best to breed for the true color of the chins.  When you mix mutations to mutations, you are putting to many colors together to get a true color for your kits.

In our case the Pink White's Dad was a Black Velvet.  So we now know that is is also TOV (The black Vevlet gene) we just can't see it because the white color masks it.
