Hey everyone!  I am a new owner of a standard grey chinchilla named Alex.  I've heard that it is possible to train chinchillas to use a litterbox.  I was just wondering if anyone knew what type of litter would be best to use.  I have an indoor cat that is litterbox trained, so would it be safe to use the same litter for Alex, or would he need a special type? Thanks!!!

No cat litter.  Chinchillas eat everything you put in the cage and you do not want them to eat that.  Just use whatever you are putting in the bottom of the cage already (aspen, pine, carefresh) If you put a litter box (not a plastic one) in the corner your chinchilla is already peeing in he should start to pee in that.  Poop is another story. Chinchillas will poop whenever and where ever they are.

Chins will dust bath in cat litter, peed in or not.

  When you set-up the potty    put a tiny bit of soiled bedding in it, covered with a little clean bedding ... and ... as Jamie said, put it in the same corner he/she is already using to tinkle in.
