Studio Lighting Questions
« on: June 10, 2007, 11:14:55 PM »

I am just curious as to what others are using in their photo studios to take their chin pics.

Mine just come out aweful.  I mean they are ok, but could be way better.  Sometimes the light just gives off a yellow glow and I have an all natural light, light bulb.  I try day light but its not enough.  The flash on my camera doesnt do that great at bringing out their colors either.

Any suggestions???  What light bulbs do you guys use and how many?

::silly::  Natural lighting is the best ... if you have a table that you can set near a window and get the picture when the strongest sunlight enters the room through that window ... that is best ... make sure you have your back to the sun.  For safety, you may want to make a photo box/shadow box.  A large cardboard box and cover it with a white material ... non-reflective ... cotton fleece (sweat suite material) is best.   Cut out the top and one side of the box.  I use a computer box ... it keeps them fairly safe.  I use "T" pins to keep the material in place.

If you use a natural light light bulb ... make sure it is either in a reflective metal holder or there is no shade on the lamp.  Lamp shades are notorious for changing the color of the light being reflected.  No other lights should be on in the room ... no matter how far away they may be, they can interfere.

Good luck.   Let me know if that works for you, or have you already done this?

Ok, I have a box Ive been using and have the reflective metal holder aimed right at the box.  but with the white chins, it makes them look like they are glowing!
Its hard to get natural sun in this room, specially since its all gone by the time I get home from work.
I have no lamp shades in the room.
No flash on the camera right, if Im using the natural light bulb aimed at the box?

It sounds as though the light may be placed too close to the white chins.  You might try moving the light and take some experimental pictures with the light at different distances.

Very true ... if you will e-mail me one of your pictures of a white, I'll see if I can correct it with my photo program ... but do try backing off a bit with the lighting, like KCchins suggested, I believe it will help.

Ok, thanks for the tips guys.  I will be taking their 4 week old bday shots tomorrow and I will try that then.  And I will post some to show you what I come up with.
I took some good shots of the twins from my other litter inside their chin carrier, and they came out great, but it was darker, and I used the up close setting, and the flash.
The light in the room was way on the other side of the room.  I might try this with them tomorrow.

I use one of those True Reveal GE bulbs. It works great for pictures, you won't get that yellow tinge to everything.

So I tried my trick of putting them in the carrier like I did the day before and it didnt work so well.
Well one thing is that each of them were moving around a lot.  When I took their pics before, they were both settled down and sleeping.

Here are some pics from yesterday in the carrier.  The three babies, and my Standard sc Female I got from Ritterspach.

T5

T7, the first one was taken the day before when she was sleeping.
The second one, was yesterday when she was running around in there.

Aliaha my Ritterspach addition :-)

Not quite sure what she was doing in this pic.  But she likes to hump the stuffed block she has in there.

I think I just need a new room with more light.  This room has weird walls, and corners, not a normal square room, so there are a lot of areas with shadows.
