;)  Janice, very nice room!  Great set up and it looks nice and bright like a happy room to be in!  Is this a room in your home or is it a chinchilla building?

::silly::  Hi Janice!
I finally took some pictures of the my chinchilla room.  This is the best.  It shows my cages along with my extra ones on the old freezer ready for new babies when I have them! ::nod::

It looks beautiful! The colors are very soothing ... the chins must love it!

It's been a long day and I looked at the last few words in your post before re-reading it ... if you can imagine reading  ::hah::  "the old freezer ready for new babies when I have them!" ... and what went through my mind!   :o  Like I said, it's been a long day!     :D

Joyce,
My chinchilla room is in a building separate from the house.  We call it the white building (of course it is white :::grins::).  I will take a picture of it when the grass gets cut!  One side is my husband's workshop and the other side is my chinchilla room.  My husband always complains about freezing whenever he goes out to work on something....I just tell him to put on long sleeves!

JoAnn,
Oh No!!   :o Just the cages "on top" are for my new little ones!  ::nod:: We are expecting little kits any day now....(I don't know exactly when they mated so) I have been patiently waiting now for over two weeks....feeling the kits move everyday and telling Cinsi (my standard mom) to hurry up and have her babies.  She will lay on her side trying to get compfy and you can see the babies playing basketball in her tummy.  She acts so miserable!

::silly::I knew you meant you would put their cage on it  ::nod:: ... like I said, it had been a long day and I was just glancing over the posts ... when I missunderstood that one, and had to carefully read over it, I knew then, it was time to go to bed!  rofl
You and your husband are doing what we are planning on doing (if they ever finish the back fill in the back yard) ... Bill will have half of the building and I have the other half, with a wall between the two.  We are putting central air and heat in it ... thank goodness Bill and I like the same temperatures as the chins ... about 68 year round.   :::grins::  I told Bill we had to insulate the wall between the two so he would not scare the bee-gee-bees out of the chins with the noise.   ::)
When is Cinsi due?
What color is her hubby?
Is this their first litter?

Jo Ann,

Cinsi is one of the standards I got from Mr. Shoots last year at the Rock Hill show.  She is approximately 1 and 1/2 years old and her mate Toby, tan, is one of the first chinchillas I got from Jamie.  He is 3 years old.  This will be their first litter.  I don't know when they actually mated because I didn't see a mating plug or really have any idea that they even got along.  I never saw them in the same cage together.  He was always in the run looking down at her like she scared him to death.  Now that I have them seperated and he can't get into the run any longer.  He sits and cries when I am cleaning the cages wanting to get to Cinsi.  The other day I let them sniff noses and they just kissed and kissed making little sweet sounds at each other.  It is just a waiting game around here.  I placed Toby in the runs back in May.

Cinsi is...standard...from Mr. Shoots last year at the Rock Hill show...is...1 and 1/2 years old and her mate Toby, tan, is...from Jamie...is 3 years old.  This will be their first litter.
It being their first litter, will make it a little easier.
The teats will elongate and become pinker and a small area of fur will fall away around them. Usually they are almost impossible to find, but will be obvious when you run your fingers from the arm pits downward to the hind legs, during the last 10 days to 2 weeks on a first time mom.
Usually the first time you feel the kits move (if you have checked daily), it will be about 2 weeks from that day that she will deliver ... if it is 1 or 2 kits, if it is 3 or more kits, you will often feel them move before the two week period.
She should eat more the last few days and during the last 12 to 24 hours, they normally increase their water intake by 50 to 100%.
Normally, in the beginning, they will 'flatten out' on the bottom of the cage and show a more shallow breathing than normal.
As it progresses, you will usually see them do what almost looks like an exercise session of stretching and pushing against the hut, wall or wire of the cage ... here she is trying to help get them into position to deliver.
You should also notice her cleaning herself almost constantly.
Most kits are delivered with the mom in the standing position.  If you can see the contractions and she starts laying on her side, please contact your vet a.s.a.p. ... there may be a problem, this is NOT the normal position chinchilla moms are in to deliver their kits.   OR if she does not deliver with in 4 or 5 hours, you may want to contact the vet.  OR if you see any blood and she does not deliver within a short period of time, contact your vet.

"I don't know when they actually mated because I didn't see a mating plug or really have any idea that they even got along.  I never saw them in the same cage together."
It only take one time and only 10 to 15 seconds. Out of all the litters that have been born here, I've only seen one mating plug.

He was always in the run looking down at her like she scared him to death.
He probably tried before she was ready and she beat him up.  ::)

He was finally patient and won her over ... they miss not getting to cuddle.  If you have the door that closes off the run so he can not get to her, it might calm both of them if they can see and smell, but not get into the same cage.

It is just a waiting game around here.

Watch for the increase in water intake and the other signs of labor I mentioned.  Keep us posted!

::howdythere:: I am going to copy and paste these last two posts to Breeding 101 and we can continue with pictures of chinchilla rooms on this post.   ::nod:: ::howdythere::

Just a reminder!!!  On my pictures you may notice that the sun is shining brightly through my blinds!  I had them opened for the picture only!

Make sure to keep your chinchillas out of direct sun rays/light....it can over heat them easily!!

This ends your public service announcement!! :::grins::

:::grins:: Finally pictures of one of  my chinchilla rooms!  We recently renovated my husbands split level office and converted the lower level it into a chinchilla room.  Right now there are 14 cages housed in the room.  The other 7 cages are still located downstairs in our breakfast room area which is our original chin room.  It is in this area we keep the high maintenance chins with medical issues that need to be monitored.  Such as seizure disorders, blindness, momma with kits, well you get the picture.
Still need to do some stuff to complete the new chin room such as, hanging shelves & pictures, putting up a cork bulletin board, etc....but this is what we have got so far.
