What should I do?
« on: June 27, 2006, 10:31:14 AM »

About two weeks ago, I got two 10 week old boys.

The one that I was told was shy and reserved, has become very outgoing, and the other little guy just hangs out on top of their sleep box, under a shelf.

He will take treats from my hand and is now starting to "groom" my fingers, but he still flinches when I try and touch him, and bath time doesn't seem to hold much interest for him either.

Am I doing something wrong?

Sounds like your doing fine. :) Some chinnies are just shy and it takes them a while to come around. Don't worry, you'll get there eventually, you just can't rush them. :)

Some young chins take time to get into the bath thingy.
I even have a few elders that will just do a tumble and out again.
They are so young and have a very long life ahead of them.
Give them time, and a good routine.Do everything with them as close to the same time everyday, and they will respond.
When you do get them up in your arms walk around with them. Go to different rooms, but only let them down to run in their normal place.

::silly:: Hi Chinderella,

    Some little ones take a little time to get going good ... try putting some dust bath dust in a salt shaker ... sit the chin in the dust bath and shake dust on it's back (stay away from the eyes and head) ... when it feels the dust bath dust, it will shake it off (usually).  Eventually it should come to love the dust bath and you will have to take them out ... I have a couple that hog it, will not let their mate in it and even try to sleep in it so the others can't get in it.   ::wacko::

For chinchillas to be shy is completly normal for the first few days. I left Dusty alone for the first two days when we got him so he could get used to the enviroment.

If she doesn't want to come out don't make her.  Its more important that she feel comfortable than it is that she get "out of the cage" time.  Mine never get out of their cage and they do just fine.  The only problem comes when you have a chinchilla that is used to coming out to play and then you take it away.  If she has never had it, she isn't missing it.
