Revelations
« on: July 11, 2007, 10:47:34 AM »

We had a visit from the breeders on Monday that we bought Chong, our four month old violet from. They came to have a look at Cheech and he is in fact a she.  :)
It's going to be tough to swap over to saying her.  rofl

We're still having a little trouble getting them to like each other. We've been putting them into a small cage together but Cheech seems to get really agitated with the lack of space which she takes out on Chong after about half an hour. We put both their houses in there and once put in the sand bath too, but Chong snarled at Cheech if she tried to use the sand bath. Cheech just sat in Chong's house and hoarded all the toys, pulling them up to the entrance and lying on them, and then they started to get snappy with each other. We'll keep on trying, there have been no more injuries other than a little bit of fur flying... so fingers crossed.

Perhaps in half a year or so we might have one or two new additions, but that of course leads to a whole new set of questions.

The other thing I realised was about Chong and his 'equipment', which I saw him cleaning a day or so ago, and this is a really weird question, but how big is it supposed to be? His was about 2 inches long and I was so shocked. I hope that's okay to ask here.

We breeders had to get over our issues in talking about that long ago!  ;D  Try telling a customer how to give a fur ring check without blushing!  :D

Anyway...yep your boy is very normal.

HAHA I agree with Jamie..lol...its always funny seeing the reaction on peoples faces when telling them that they should check for hair rings and give a demonstration...lol....And Jenova it will take a little time but I am sure everything will be ok....is chong a boy and cheech is a girl?....are you wanting to begin breeding?...you have to take that into perspective with cheech being a girl now...and all the million things you have to start preparing for if this is so..

I know, lol. It's still hard to get used to calling Cheech a she now.  :)
We are fully prepared for any new little balls of fluff we probably will get, although the way it's looking now that may never happen. First, just to reassure you we have spoken to the breeders at length about the consequences of putting them together. We've still decided we want to.

But at the moment, Cong is just so scared of Cheech. he tucks himself as far into the corner as he can get and bars his teeth and growls at her. She is at first very interested in him and very friendly, then gets bored and goes off to do her own thing (still weird saying 'her'). She keeps checking back on him and eventually when he doesn't stop growling she goes for him. This took half an hour the first time and 45 minutes the second time. What I did the second time was I swapped them over into each other's cages for an hour and then put Cheech back in her own cage with Chong. The first time they were in a neutral, small cage.

Well we'll keep on persevering. I just don't know why Chong is so scared. He even pees sometimes and not at Cheech (I know they often pee on each other as a sign of anger).

Have you tried putting them both in his cage?

Not yet. We'll try that, then probably letting them out together, then probably just loop through the different techniques until they get used to being around each other more. We usually leave two or three days between each 'encounter', mainly to give Chong a break because he gets so scared.

Thanks for the advice.  :)

try not to make introductions too sudden or too lond...if he gets too stressed out then he will remember she stresses him out and maybe never beable to be with her.  It has to be short gradual intro's, because you dont want to end up doing more damage than good with intros.

Thanks for the advice!

I have noticed that Chong (the baby) copies what Cheech is doing. Whether it's eating food or hay or playing so hopefully that's a good sign.
