The short answer is yes.  A male could possibly mate with and impregnate his mother at that age, though he is a little young.  It is most likely his way of expressing dominance over her, but I would go ahead and separate them, just in case.  You really don't want to have inbred kits.

That is correct.  You must remove opposite sex babies before 3 months of age to prevent inbreeding.

I have separate them. I was toled (by a vet) that chinchilla were sexually active at 6 months. > ::tickedoff::

If vets are not reliable how is?

I am happy to now of this forum. ::nod::

Oh yeah, I have heard all sorts of things from vets all the way up to "feed them lots of fresh fruits and veggies"!  Chinchillas are still so new as pets that vets are still having to learn about them.  I find that the newer, younger vets are a better choice because they are learning about chinchillas more and more in vet schools (some vet schools)  The old-timers probably haven't seen many chinchillas and sometimes they refuse to admit they don't know.

The best people to get answers from are the breeders. We (the breeding community as a whole) have seen it all and the chinchilla world is very small!!  The breeders keep each other up to date on new findings and weird happenings.  We know that some chinchillas can breed as early as 3 months because we have seen it happen!  I have heard stories of males breeding back to mom even earlier than that.  All of my male chinchillas are weaned at 7 weeks.  Runt males by 8 weeks.  No exceptions.

::silly::  Male kits as young as 10 weeks old have been known to impregnate their mother.

In-breeding is very bad, but, the instinct to survive is even stronger ... sometimes the father, will even kill his son for the right to breed.

This is why it is best not to have two males in the same cage IF there are females in the same room or within smelling distance.  Males will sometimes fight to the death to breed a female they can not even get to.

I had a father and son housed together for 9 months one time and everything seemed fine between them ... until the female in the next cage went into season ... the father almost killed the son.  The damage to the son that was  done was horrific.
