Tonight we were doing hair ring checks on our boys, when we noticed something different on our beige chinchilla. It looked like something was on his penis, and on a closer look it seems like it is a bunch of tiny hairs?? They kind of go all the way around and are very light in colour. We never noticed this before. Is this normal? Sorry for the weird question!

To me ....you just described a hair ring starting to form.

Thanks for your reply. Let me re-phrase a little...the light coloured hairs are very short and look like they are growing out of the penis....it is not longer hairs wrapped around. There was a little hair on it from our BV chin (that was obvious!) and I was able to get that off. But these little hairs look as if they are growing out around the penis. Is this possible? Or could it be something else?
Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Still sounds like hair ring. I've never seen hair grow on the shaft.
Not to say it never happens, but a good cleaning should show you.
You may be surprised at how long it is. :blush2:

::think:: I've never seen hair growing there on one of my males ... of course my eyes are not that good either. :)
::think:: You might try using Neosporin or a triple antibiotic ointment to clean him real good. Neosporin will soak into the skin and would not hurt the chin ... if you use Vaseline, it makes a gooey mess because it is not absorbed by the skin.
If they are still there, after you clean him, a vet check wouldn't hurt ... just to make sure. I would think hair growing on the penis would be a very bad irritant to him. ::shrug::

Thanks for your replies! I was out of town or I would have written back sooner.
So we did another hair ring check on both our chinchillas and I they both look the same. Near the tip the skin feels a little rough, then as you look up the penis it is smooth, then there is a section that kind of looks like a bump (where the "hairs" are growing) close to the base.
Is there anywhere on here that I can see some pictures of healthy male chinchilla parts? It's not a hair ring because I can't pick it off. It's like it is just part of the skin, and I can see it on both of them.
I will try the neosporin just in case.
Thanks for your help everyone.

::silly:: I have a picture of one cleaning himself, and one of a male that had peronies, but, I don't think either one of them would help you.
Could you take a good clear picture of what they look like and post it?
You have me courious, because I've never seen fur growing on the penis inside the sheath.

I was just thinking the same thing, always learning.

I am going to take my Petie to the vet, but I noticed the exact same thing on him. Did anyone figure out what it was? Just curious.
