Title: What are the best treats for chins?
Post by: lesliesuniquecharm on November 15, 2007, 06:03:49 PM
I*ve only had Roo for a week 1/2 but ive seen sometimes ya cant trust the pet stores brand confusing something with rabbit stuff or what not. I was wondering f anyone has had a hit with a particular treat or chew toy? heeh I*m spoiling him alittle but hes adorable! I only want the best for him.  :)

I don't recommend any of the pet store treats.  Your best treat is plain old raisins.  Just one or two a day.  My chinchillas do love the critterkabab toys you buy in pet stores.  Its a metal pole you attach to the side of the cage and you can put all sorts of chew toys on it.  Mine love the lava triangles and the orchard sticks.  Just remember that chinchillas can not have the wood of a fruit tree that produces a fruit with a pit.  So read what type of wood each packet contains.

Dried blueberries are also a big hit at our house.  I try not to give them every day because of sugar in the processing.  Just one every now and then instead of a raisin.

A question about the fruit twigs...we got Ari some apple twigs and she LOVES them.  But as soon as she has munched all the bark off, she tosses the sticks aside.  Is that typical?

Each chinchilla is different in their likes and dislikes of their toys and treats.  ::)

Pixel LOVES shredded wheat. No sugar, no cinnamon, just plain. When she hears that bag rustle in the kitchen, she starts barking. She likes raisins, too, but she only gets them once a week. Plain Cheerio's are a hit too.

I was feeding him charlie food, but i found bugs in it! So i switched him to the Kaytee Fiesta food.. it was more exspensive than the rest, so i got that 1 until i could find him something better.

You need to find a supplier who has good food, sweetie. You can't feed him store bought stuff. Its never guaranteed to be quality, and its usually not as fresh as implied. I use http://www.chinworld.com/ they have all kinds of good stuff. Personally I like Mazuri.
Good luck.

You're welcome, glad to be of service. I love how cheap they are too. The only thing that ever gets me is the shipping.

PS
Do you know that to safely switch foods it needs to be a gradual thing so as not to upset the GI tract?
