Title: Best way to safely sanitize cage?
Post by: Brazilnut on March 17, 2008, 06:43:39 PM
Hello everyone,

Well, the title pretty much says it all. I've heard of people using a vinegar/water combination but was wondering what else was out there. The cage I have was custom built with melamine from Kindra's design (See picture below or view spoiledchins dot com website).
My question is...How do you clean your cage each week? Any recommendations for cleaning the melamine?

Thanks :-)

I just wanted to add that the bottom of the cage is a pull-out metal tray!  ;)

I use baking soda and water.  Baking soda is natural and safe and an abrasive, I acutally clean my whole house with is.  It's none toxic, and a disinfectant.  I wipe everything down after so it's dry and clean.  I also use a product called SOX.  It's natural with enzymes, which I find helps break down their pee if I miss it in my spot cleaning during the week.  (I use a different version of this for our cats when they pee and it always gets rid of the smell.)  To be most effective this needs to be left on the spot for a few hours, so if your tray pulls out it would be helpful.  I wipe it off right away, because they always hop around when I"m cleaning.  Hope this helps.

I personally used Pampers sensitive baby wipes. I always have them on hand, and they are good with the urinie.
