Title: I have the smartest chinchilla in the world!
Post by: nemue on April 01, 2008, 08:43:48 PM
Last week I went upstairs to the sight of Kira sitting smugly on the bathroom scale!  I checked the cage, and turns out she figured out how the doors work adn pushed it open!  She's way too smart!  I now have a lock on the cage door.

I also just put metal guards around the edges of the cage that a friend made for us to stop the poop from flying everywhere.  they're tied on with metal, and have been working really well.  Until today, when I went to check on them and Kira was working hard to untie the metal, which she succeeded in!  She's way too smart for her own good!

Lol, they certainly are smart, aren't they?  Especially at escape! ::nod::

I think she was going to use the metal wire to pick the lock.  I wouldn't put it past her.

If she does, your chin is definitely the smartest in the world!!  :::grins::

rofl your chinchilla is so smart!

I did have a thought though....maybe she is bored, and obviously doesn't want to be caged.  My white chin would spend hours gnawing on his cage bars, which I interpreted as bordom and frustration about be locked up.

I gave my white chin a porch so he can move freely in and out of his cage, but it's elevated so he won't jump down.  He barely ever chews the cage bars now.  He seems so content when he's on his porch - like he doesn't have to escape because he has freedom already (even though we're just tricking him)

Also, since your chin is so smart, you should channel that intelligence into learning tricks!  I bet you could condition her to learn all sorts of really cute stuff.  I'll be waiting for some video footage!   ::silly::

we're actively working on getting them moved to the living room so they can hang out with us.  I read when I was researching them that they need quiet, but I don't htink it's fair for them to be in their own room!  We just need some compromising in our house about poop and chewing furniture, etc.!  But, you're probably right.

So far, I can get Kira on my shoulder.  She LOVES it.  She's all over me all the time.  If I don't offer it to her by making it easily accessible she climbs up my back and gives me a look once she's up there.  I'd love to train her to do more.  She's super smart, that one!
