Title: babies and caging

I have one little boy who lives with his mommy still he is only 2 weeks old and has just discovered how to get out of the cage. the bars are relativly close together and we are not sure how he is sqeezing out but have fixed it for now.

what type of cages do you use to house the mommies and babies?? we are trying to purchase a cage specifically for housing the mom when she gets close to giving birth.

any comments will help!!

Congratulations on your kit!

I use and have always heard that 1/2 inch x 1/2 inch is the best for kits...that way it is a definite that little ones can't get out.  They are masters at escape!

yes they are! he has gotten out 5 times now...alll when we are in the room however. Where would you suggest purchasing a cage with the 1/2 x 1/2 wire??

You can find cage wire at any home improvement store....such as.....Lowe's, Home Depot....places like that.

I would get that fixed immediatly if he keeps getting out he could be seriously hurt, or killed. The wirre can be no larger than 1 by 1/2 inch I keep all my cages 1/2 by 1/2 to be safe

the saftey isnt the biggest issue. all the chins are on ground level in a completley closed off room. even the vents are on the celing and we have a play pen around his cage so when he does get out, he doesnt get very far...but the little fatso doesnt fit thru anymore so we are working on building breeding/birthing cages for our other chins!

::chinhappy:: Hi--I may be a little late answering this post, but it is never too late to make suggestions to someone on the safety of cages.  I have a website that is unfinished--I'll get it done someday.
If you want to read my section on Cages & Set Up it is:
 www.chinchillas.org/pets/chinestates   I would also suggest maternity cages that do not have any shelves & are  only one low level so babies cannot climb around & get hurt.  I get all my cages from Martins Cages.  You may have this taken care of by now.  So the
little guy got too fat to get out...........JANE rofl
