I am wounder if a chin's fur changs color cause my Snowball is a pink white and he is getting 2 spots on his fur I will post pics I am not sure if this is normal or if something is wrong
-
Chinchillas do change color over time...Beiges will turn more orange, Pink eared chinchillas will get freckles all over their ears, mosaics will darken and fade during the first year and a half, Black and Brown Velvets will continue to darken and get more veiling down their bodies the first year.....
But looking at your pictures, they don't get a spot that big in 7 days. It looks to me like your white has come into contact with something that has stained his fur. Look around the cage and see what might be getting on him.

::silly::You might want to check the inside of that pipe in the floor of the cage. I'd give it a good scrubbing, I'm sure you did before you put it in there, but another one couldn't hurt. :::grins:: If he's been outside his cage playing, he could have rubbed up against most anything if he managed to play hide-n-seek like mine do sometimes. :D
Is the fur in that area completely even with the fur around it? If not, it could be showing the under color/new fur that may be trying to grow in. ::shrug::
I've seen pink white (properly named a white/beige) start showing more beige as they get older, but never one that changed that drastically, that quickly. Of course anything can happen. I'm not about to say it is impossible, just very, very, very rare. :-[ :-\
Keep taking pictures so that we can see if the spot gets bigger or fades away! ::nod::

I caught him running in the wheel and well here is the pic I took it probably has something to do with his base of his tail color too

I have a white chin that did that and the wheel is what caused it. When he runs it is hitting his side and mine had some kind of grease or something on it and it got on his fur. Check the wheel and see if that is what it is. I got rid of mine like that and got the 1 from quality cages.

;) yep thats what mine did.

guess I'm going shopping I'm just gladhe doesn't have a fur health problem and does anyone have a pic of what fur fungus looks like ?
I went to the store and couldn't find desenex talc to put in their dust bath just the spray stuff so I wasn't able to compare it to gold bond there are probably the same thing but if any one has and suggestions I would love to read them
I also figured out why I mistype so many things by 1 cat Mr. Bizzle loves to rubb my hand while I type didn't connect the 2 till today now he is sitting on my mouse pad notty little boy

If your chinchilla gets fungus its fur will fall out. You will start noticing bald spots and the exposed skin will be red and flaky. The fur loss will spread rather quickly if untreated. Its pretty unmistakable.
-
Is the desenex in a yellow bottle? I think I saw it at Wal-Mart but at the time I could not remember the name of it so I didn't get any. ::shrug::
-
Yes, mine is in a yellow bottle.
-
I am not sure cause I couldnt find the powder just the spray but if it is at walmart guess I am going there too Gold bond is in a yellow bottle but I don't know if it is safe for chins Jo Ann says desenex is so I am trying to compare the ingredients
-
Thankx chin club on the fur fungus info do you know what causes it?
-
High humidity can cause it, chinchillas that constantly sit under a drippy waterbottle can get it, dirty cage conditions can cause it. Plus it is highly contagious...Chinchillas can catch it from cats or other pets with ringworm, and from other infected chinchillas.
-
thankyou
I won't have too much to worry about cause my cage gets cleaned every sunday when I get my new newspaper and they never sit under the water bottle and my cats don't go outside
I have one other question
my chins always sit ontop of their house and are huddled close together are they cold? or just really close they are both male
see
-
I don't think they are cold. :) Chins just like to be close to eachother. They are cuddlers. ::silly::
-
thankx
-
The are beauties, and look so happy together.
I love the spot story, and have come across a scattered rub mark myself.
-
::silly:: Looks like that wheel was the cause for the mysterious sudden change of colors! That piece that was rubbing his side doesn't look to safe either ... what if it were to turn over and poked him in the side. :'(
I love it when they snuggle/cuddle ... it is so sweet ... cagemates usually groom each other, too. They are beautiful!

thankyou all for the input
I did find desenex at walmart and got some
yes they are always grooming each other they don't fight anymore
it is funny to watch them go from the one bottom shelf and climb/bouce/jump off the side of the cage to the top shelf on top of their house
I have another question snowball doesn't take baths he will sniff the bath but won't go in I thought that it might have been cause the ceramic one was Buddy L's so I got my old antique glass candy holder jar (I used to use that for Buddy then I got the ceramic one)I put it through the dishwasher before giving it to snowball and he wouldn't go in that one either so my chins have 2 bath houses in their cage all the time now (spoiled little guys)
how do I get Snowball to take a bath cause he needs to get rid of those 2 spots on his fur?
-
If your chinchilla wasn't offered a bath as he grew it may be slow to come to him. Just keep trying. He should catch on from your other one. I wouldn't leave the dust in the cage all the time. If they dust too often it will dry out their skin. Its best just to put it in about 3 times a week. Eventually the one will see the other jumping in and will do the same. You might also want to try an open topped dust bath. We use the plastic shoe boxes that are about .98 cents at Wal-mart. Its OK to use plastic because you only leave it in for about 10 minutes and the chinchillas are too busy dusting to chew.
Its not an emergency to get the spot off of the fur. It won't hurt him to let it wear off.
-
::silly::
Like Jamie said, I would try the open dust bath tray ( glass baking dishes, if they are big enough, are great). ::silly::
Also, leaving the dust bath in there more than 15 or 20 minutes ... you are asking for trouble ... they will urinate in it, which invites fungus. ::puke::
Any time your chin urinates in the dust bath dust ... empty it, wash the container and put fresh dust bath dust in it before he uses it again. ::)

well last night I took the bath jar out of the cage but left the ceramic one in cause Buddy L likes to sleep in it sometimes and the wheel I took it out cause I cleaned their cage last night and was washing everything down with those clorox wipes (love those things) and noticed that they were grinding the part that held the wheel on
you can see that in this pic so if anyone has one of these kind please get rid of it or check it everyday cause if I wouldn't have caught it in time that part would have fallen off and my chins would have gotten hurt really bad

Its funny how they love to sleep inside anything they can fit in...a few things they can't quite fit into but try their best anyway! rofl ....you did remove the dust from it, right? We dont want these sweet chinchillas breathing in all of that dust while they sleep.
-
no ther is no dust in it I don't think that I will be using as a dust bath house and just use the large glass thing I have to watch them flip around and he isn't sleeping in it that musch anymore just on top of his house with Snowball
what to do?
