Title: Litter Scoop?
Post by: kwong2001 on December 10, 2008, 09:14:32 PM
First post, new owner...one spoiled chinchilla hehe

Anyhoo, I've got some standard kitty litter, the clumping kinda that's not so natural, it that makes any sense...it's unscented litter btw.  Anyhoo, anyone know of any good kitty litter scoops that can pick up the poop, but still sift away the un-clumped kitty litter?  I have a feeling they don't make anything that would work, so maybe something else that might work?  I was looking at some strainers for cooking, but they don't seem to have the right shape to make it even remotely efficient to pick up the poo.

I don't think kitty litter is recommended for chinchillas...

You are supposed to use kiln dried pine, carefresh or aspen.

I use a pooper scooper (for kitty litter) to scoop my pans.

Yeah, I am not sure about the kitty litter.  Most litters are made of clay.  If your little one eats the litter, it could clump in the digestive tract and cause a bowel blockage.

The cage has a wire bottom, she's not in contact with the kitty litter.

I would still use a chinchilla safe bedding, carefresh, aspen or pine shavings.  I wouldn't risk the chins health, IF there is any possible way they could get to it.  Pine is my favorite bedding!
