Title: How do you breed you chinchillas?

Hello! I was thinking about getting into breeding, and I was interested to see how you guys breed. ;) ;)

I recommend pair breeding for any new breeder.  It is the easiest and least risky way to breed.  However, it seems from your other posts that you are fairly new to the world of chinchillas.  Breeding is a HUGE commitment of time and money.  It is not something that should be taken lightly, and there is a lot to learn before you can breed chinchillas responsibly.  I would recommend you take some time to learn about breeding before you get into it.  This forum is great for answering questions.  I would also recommend reading "The Joy of Chinchillas", which can be bought online at chinworld.com or at cachins.org, as well as the booklet published by the Chinchilla Club on chinchilla care and ownership.

Yes. I am new. And I wouldn't want to do that until a year or so, maybe two. But if I ever did, I wanted to do some research on it first. I was just curious which one was more popular! ;)

If you are considering breeding, I recommend doing a TON of research, there is so much to learn.  I have been breeding for 5 years and still learn things everyday.

Breeding is a HUGE committment and I'm sure any other breeder will tell you there is a LOT of heartbreak involved, it's not all cute fuzzy little animals.

First, TONS of research..

Second, you will need to find high quality chinchillas with a pedigree, it is a MUST for breeding.

Find a reputable breeder near you that can mentor you.

I work primarily with pair breeding, although I have one trio, and one colony cage.  I don't particularly care for breeding runs myself, but that's just personal preference.  Many breeders use runs successfully, and breed perfectly good, healthy animals.

I have some pairs and trios but mostly colonies. What is best for you will be different. If I were you I would take time and learn a lot more then start with one pair after 2 years or more. It seems that way to many people get a chinchilla and a month or two later they want to breed.

I use breeding runs (tunnels).
