Title: Chins Can Scare You!
Post by: Jo Ann on July 26, 2006, 02:40:38 PM
::silly::Giget, mom to my quads, scared the be-gee-bees out of me yesterday morning!

I open the blinds and see all four of her kits huddled together in a corner away from her ...This is NOT normal!!!

She's got her head in the PVC pipe ... she's on her back ... legs up in the air and I can't even see her breathing!  I called her name 3 times, she never moved ...

Expecting the worst, I opened the cage door.... head came out of the PVC pipe, she jumped up on her feet and ran to me ... she wanted a treat and wanted out!  Bless her heart ... to go to such extremes to get me to let her out early!  The kits must have been very trying during the night ... the way they were huddled in the corner, I bet they got a good fussing at, too.

I'm sure you all have things that happen that have been nerve racking ... let's hear about it!

how did Giget get into a PVC pipe?

....What is a PVC pipe anyway?

::silly:: A PVC pipe is the only 'safe' plastic for chinchillas.  It can be gnawed on, but comes off in very fine pieces ... almost like a powder.  It's very hard.  You can find it in most plumbing sections of stores like Home Depot, Heckengers, Northwest Hardware and other hardware stores.   We get it in 4" and 5" diameters usually.  The "T" and "Y" shapes are great for them to hide, play and sleep in.   ::nod::
Inside, it is dark, close quarters and cool ... something all chins love!   They are wonderful to put in a cage with kits when the daddy is returned ... they will seek refuge in it if mom and dad get a little rowdy.  I like to put them in the cage about a week before mom is due, just encase she delivers early ... it's a safe-haven for the kits.  No accidental deaths from being stepped on.

I'll have to do a better look for pictures of the Y & T shaped ones ... but here's one of Smokey ... escaping(a short break) from kits with sharp teeth and nursing.  She's in a 3" tube of PVC pipe.

My chin Chloe scared the poopoo out of me when I first got her. I had Berry for a couple of months, and he never made any noises, well around 2am, I hear this loud crying noise (Chloe doing the warning call) and it was so loud I could hear it from the bedroom. I jumped up and thought the worst had happened to my new baby, and raced to her cage, and she was sitting on her top shelf just making that noise. She was just fine, I think she was a little scared being in a new cage in a new house... ya know the usual. Poor thing, she makes it every once in a while now... just for attention. Yep, I still run to her cage to find out if she's okay. She's definately got me trained. LOL!

I've only heard Maggie make a noise twice, but my husband said he's heard her make the noise several times. It's totally weird.

My husbands parents have a dog Tipper. Tipper has a squeeze toy they call Porky, I think its a hedgehog... well anyways the sound Maggie made sounded just like Porky.

Every morning at 9am, just when I am falling asleep from work Harvey starts doing his call too.  Every time if I am really close to falling asleep it scares the crap out of me and then I am wide awake for about half an hour I always try to get home and fall fast asleep before 9am hits, because he never fails to start at 9am, scares me half to death.

::scaredspeachless:: I learned first hand this morning that a ONE WEEK OLD KIT can play dead as well as an adult!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Scared me to death.  ::scaredspeachless::
