Title: What type of treats do you feed your chinnies?
Post by: Brucey1234 on January 13, 2009, 05:01:46 PM
Hey! I just wanted to hear what everybody had to say about the treats. Some put up a good argument that raisins have too much sugar, and some think otherwise. I would like to see if anybody had any treat tips. Also, if you chose other, feel free to write what you feed as treats! ;)

I give my chins one raisin - twice a week.  Sometimes I give them papaya too.

I offer a variety of treats...shredded wheat, cheerios, raisins, dried papaya, dried cranberries, rose hips, mrs' pasture's horse cookies (a few nibles at a time)...each chin has his or her favorite.  Of course, I don't give these all at once, only one treat per day.

::silly::  I checked "other" because I do feed many different treats ... it's finding and keeping up with who likes what that can be a real task (notations on the cage cards helps with this when you have 100+  chinchillas   :D  ).

I do strongly suggest giving a chin the same treat each day for a week for a "first time new treat", this gives you to chance to know for sure what might cause problems with this particular treat for this particular chin.
Some chins will tend to get diarrhea from the same treat that does not bother another chin.
As soon as you see a negative reaction to a treat, make sure that chin never gets that particular treat again.
Also, chinchillas do have allergies, the same as humans, and not all chinchillas are allergic to the same thing.

I offer one treat per chin per day (not one of each).

 1. bite size shredded wheat (not the frosted kind and the one with the lowest amount of salt and lowest amount of sugar -check out the package carefully)
 2. raisins (grapes have to much moisture and the chin can choke on the seeds)
 3. cranrasins (dried cranberries ... I've never tried fresh cranberries so I don't know how that might work)
 4. dried and fresh papaya (very small pieces)
 5. dried rosehips
 6. dried carrots and/or a thin crosscut slice of a fresh carrot
 7. a nibble or two of a fresh banana or a home-dried (no preservatives) banana chip
 8. live culture yogurt
 9. wheat Cheerios
10. wheat checks
11. unsalted sunflower seeds

Please, do not give your chinchilla meat or meat products, their system is not made to digest this and it will kill them.
Please, do not give your chinchilla nuts or products made from nuts, their digestive system is not made to properly digest nuts and the natural oil in the nuts can result in a fatty liver that can kill your chin.

dried Pineapple bits are okay too!
Thank you! I was wondering if dried cranberries were safe for Chins!
