Title: Is your chinchilla right-handed or left-handed?
Post by: chinclub on July 27, 2006, 07:05:39 AM
I never really thought about it until I took in a rescue that had a very swollen and disfigured hand.  We have had to keep a close eye on it to be sure it was healing and in doing so we realized how much our little chinchilla really wanted to use it!!  Even before it was back to normal he would sit and hand food to his left hand with his right trying to find a way to hold it.  I am happy to say that the hand is now back to normal size and he has full use of it now but this has shown us that our chinchilla is certainly left-handed. This got us wondering if all chinchillas (like humans) favor one hand or another and if so, which hand is most commonly used.

So, go hand your little chinchillas a few treats or toys and take our poll to let us know what you find out!!

::silly:: Of the 5 adults and 7 kits in the living room:

Jewell & Piper are left-handed.  :::grins::
Toofie & Jay-Jay are right-handed.  :::grins::
Giget, uses both (I guess, with quads you have to be ambidextrous!) rofl

One of the 7 kits is right handed.  ;D
The other six are undecided at this point.      ::shrug::

I'll just do the numbers on the other 200 sometime this week ... no break-down of who's who. :D

Maggie appears to favor her left hand only slightly, most of the time she uses both hands.

I gave her a raisen yesterday and she bit it in half, with a piece in each hand, it was soo cute.

hmm, both of mine hold their food in the right hand every time ive seen them, but when they want something outside of the cage they reach with their left, not sure if that counts as ambi or not, they tend to use right hand to do the nose wipe thing as well
