Title: From the ashes rises a new beginning (with a few concerns)
Post by: Petey621 on April 23, 2010, 10:27:29 PM
For those of you who may know i lost my dear chin Petey a couple days ago and so with much deliberation and some coaxing by my gf we have adopted another chinchilla named Chiko. Chiko is a 3 month old tan male and very new to his surroundings. What concerns me about him is that he is a compulsive jumper so far and im worried he might hurt himself jumping around the cage the way he does. I think he is just scared and he will settle down when he gets a little older but i hope hes not as skittish for his whole life. anyone know if this is the way a young chin would act to new surroundings?

Young chinchillas have  a lot of energy and  jumping around is their way of playing.  It is perfectly normal and shows that he is feeling good.  Over time you should see less of that during the day but I'm sure you will hear a whole lot of it at night for years to come.   :::grins::

Aww congrats  ::nod::

Yes some can be pretty wild. I tell folks the first year it's just like a puppy, energy plus.

I’m not sure, mine bounce off the cage ::silly:: all the time.  It's been over a year.  I don't seem them ever stopping.  They also like free scaling the cage.  We put them in a big box one time, and all you hear is "bang bang".  I think the bathtub is the most fun (ensuring it is beyond completely dry).

No they don't stop, but once matured and used to their surroundings they become a little more manageable.
And if you train them even better.
If I call a name and say no they freeze for a sec. they know who I'm talking too. :D
It's all in a good routine that kits need to learn.
